~ Emperor Gruumm. |
Emperor Gruumm is the main antagonist of Power Rangers S.P.D.
He is the leader of the Troobian Empire and the arch-nemesis of the SPD Shadow Ranger, Anubis "Doggie" Cruger, who has conquered and destroyed hundreds of planets, stripping them of their resources. He's later revealed to be a servant of Omni the Magnificence, the true leader of the empire, whereas Gruumm has been building him a gigantic body in order to conquer all life in the universe.
He was portrayed by Rene Naufahu.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
General/In Past[]
- He admitted to conquering three galaxies, two-star systems, and over a hundred planets, even destroying some and stripping them of their resources to build a gigantic body for Omni. This makes him responsible for an incalculable number of deaths.
- He is abusive towards his henchmen, Broodwing and Mora/Morgana, as well as towards his Krybots and other recruits, threatening to get rid of them should they fail him, killing one of them for the same reason, and is easily fed up with Mora's childish antics where he stated it's not easy raising a child, demonstrating that he wouldn't make a great father himself.
- While he has comedic moments involving his interactions with Mora, such as playing around with a doll version of Z, forcing Broodwing to play "tea party" with Mora, and being fed up with her crying over her broken doll, these moments barely detract him of his heinousness since they more focused Mora than him.
- Even then, his heinous actions are played 100% seriously and during the second half of the series, he subverts this after turning Mora into her adult form and has her traumatically brainwashed by Omni.
- While seemingly loyal to Omni the Magnificence and the reason for conquering and destroying many planets was to build a body for him, he's done so out of fear rather than genuine loyalty, which he's shown to justify his failures to him during their discussions telepathically and he seems fed up when his request to deal with Cruger personally by Omni was denied.
- He also doesn't react or mourn for his destruction after the SPD Rangers defeated him.
- He stands out as one of the most heinous Power Rangers villains to date, equally with Venjix, as due to his history of conquering and destroying hundreds of planets, he perhaps arguably has one of, if not, the highest kill counts in the franchise.
S.P.D.[]
- He launched a mass-scale invasion of Sirius, the home planet of Anubis "Doggie" Cruger. It was stated the war lasted for months on end and the Sirians had no sleep fighting against Gruumm's forces, led by General Benaag, as they killed billions of their kind and destroyed multiple cities.
- As a result, he caused the extinction of the Sirians, which left Cruger as the last of his kind, devastating him to where he promised he never held his Shadow Saber ever since.
- Ordered General Benaag to kidnap Cruger's wife, Isinia, and made him believe she died during the battle when in actuality, he kept her imprisoned for many years until the present, just to spite his archenemy.
- It is heavily implied that according to sources, he was responsible for destroying the home planet of Dr. Kat Manx.
- Destroyed Planet Alandria after stripping it of its resources while laughing maniacally, which heavily indicated that its population fleeing at that time got caught in the planet's destruction.
- Sent a Blue-Head Krybot to retrieve the Proton Accelerator to travel through a wormhole to Earth, when the Krybot failed to do so, Gruumm used his telekinesis to crush it into scrap metal.
- He convinced and made the A-Squad SPD Rangers turn against Cruger and the rest of Space Patrol Delta in favor of power.
- Despite promising he'd have them rule alongside him on Earth, nothing suggests he genuinely meant keeping the end of his bargain with the team and comes off as superficial than keeping his word over it, if not, manipulating them without them knowing.
- He staged multiple attacks to destroy Newtech City to spite Cruger and as a distraction to have his henchmen rob as many resources and minerals like gold, diamonds, plasma, ionized liquid, and iridium. These attacks often endangered the populace and civilians as well, the most notable involved:
- Hiring Rhinix to turn people into slime, dozens of them, to use as fuel.
- Using Proton Spikes to cause a three-level, seismic earthquake, which would've destroyed the city.
- Recruited Volka into obtaining Goradon, intending to use it as a weapon of destruction, which came out bursting from the ground that destroyed buildings, which would've likely killed people inside there.
- Killed two space criminals he recruited just because they didn't have an eviler plot, which he threw the first one off his ship's deepest ends and electrocuted the second one.
- He intended to keep Elizabeth "Z" Delgado, the B-Squad SPD Yellow Ranger, turned into a doll from one of Mora's monsters, as a trophy.
- He had Broodwing tricked Katana into believing the SPD Rangers were the enemy while having him capture several shrines from Kyoto, which all carried over hundreds of people, taking them hostage.
- Personally calls out on Cruger for a duel just to get back at him for the second time, which he attacked the B-Squad SPD Rangers and Commander Birdie, which the latter could've been killed had it not been for Cruger.
- Tortured Piggy by making him go through his Pit of Doom for 24/7 hours or he'll have him vaporized by Morgana as a loyalty test. While Piggy's torture during his run in the Pit of Doom happened offscreen, he explicitly stated he went through facing spiders, snakes, rather horrible smells, and other horrors best left unsaid, which he likely didn't enjoy and felt tormented.
- He tried to take over the Earth in the past during the era of the Dino Thunder Rangers with help from Zeltrax.
- He only left because Mora pointed out that if they don't go through the wormhole in time, he'll have to restart re-conquering and destroying all the planets, galaxies, and star systems he already conquered, which would also mean rebuilding Omni's entire body from scratch, which he did so out of pragmatism.
- Upon learning about Broodwing's betrayal, he sent numerous space criminals and Krybots after him, though this attempt failed.
- When Mora discovered Omni out of curiosity, he had her frighteningly brainwashed and controlled against her will.
- Although Mora has helped Gruumm in his attacks on Newtech City and trying to destroy the B-Squad SPD Rangers, she's still nevertheless a child, which makes the act just as worse as it is.
- Orchestrated the kidnapping of Anubis Cruger and the rest of the B-Squad SPD Rangers by having the A-Squad SPD Rangers pose as a diversion and through Piggy who sold out the latter.
- Unleashed his master, Omni the Magnificence in his completely built body, to fully invade Earth, starting with trying to destroy Newtech City.
- He sadistically reveals to Cruger that he had Isinia in his hands all along and later tries to drop her to her death just to spite Cruger one last time, not before trying to take away his own life just to avoid justice.
- Duels and tries to kill Cruger for the final time before he is sealed away in a confinement card for good.
Trivia[]
- He is the very first Pure Evil during the Disney Era of the Power Rangers franchise. Coming after him would be Octomus the Master and Venjix Computer Virus.
- Despite being Pure Evil, co-producer Greg Aronowitz stated in an interview that Gruumm has always been Omni's puppet and while he had power, he had many issues and weaknesses, which Omni took advantage of him for a rather long time. This could imply that Gruumm's actions were under the fact he was ordered to do everything under Omni's command and believed to come off as being forced to do so than his own will, which would disqualify Gruumm in terms of standing out in the Heinous Standards. This isn't proven to be the case, despite what was stated, it's made clear that Gruumm took sadistic delight in conquering/destroying planets, and he's been doing so of his own accord, rather than being forced to work for Omni, he served him out of fear than anything else, including "loyalty".
- Chronologically by the timeline, Gruumm is the final Pure Evil in the Power Rangers franchise.
