Dr. James Sheridan, also simply known as Sheridan or the Annoying Neighbour, is the overarching antagonist of the Glitch Productions computer-animated web series Meta Runner.
He was an ex-TAS Corp scientist and the mastermind behind Project Blue, a mysterious project where he planned on creating an AI called T.A.R.I. (stands for Turbo Artificial Rapid Intelligence) to assist Meta Runners in order to avoid getting fired by Derek Lucks. His dream was to use the project to become known in the gaming industry, but after an accident that ended the project prematurely, he abandoned this dream and went down a path of insanity. He is Tari's archenemy and creator.
He is voiced by Anthony Sardinha.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- Although he admitted that Lucks stole the credit from the Meta Runner arms he made, it wasn't a good excuse for his actions, since he took his anger out on others who had nothing to do with his tragedy, and his motivation in season three is done entirely in the name of his ego.
- While he seems to have good intentions, wanting to change the world with his Global Warp Technology, it was never the case since he clearly just wanted to make an impact just to satisfy his ego, and his actions caused more harm than good.
- While he did have several comedic moments, a lot of them more or less emphasize how crazy he is, and he lost all of them by the end.
- Although he seems to be insane after the lab explosion, he still possesses a clear moral agency as he is still aware of what is right and wrong while also capable of thinking through his schemes and is intelligent enough from his surroundings. It's also implied that he was already slightly unstable even before the lab incident, so this is nullified.
- While he seems to treat Lucinia decently, since she helped him in Project Blue and wants to use Tari's mind fragments to revive her, he treats her more like a tool for his plans, considering he turned her digital self into a mindless personal assassin, not to mention he eventually subverts this prevention when he decides it would be easier to kill Tari rather than dissect her for the data that would revive Lucinia.
- While his death is much more excruciating than Lucks', being fried alive by several of his own control bugs, it is played for catharsis, considering what he did to Tari and everyone else. It's also karmic, considering he was destroyed by what he used to frame Masa for Lucks' death.
- While he was the creator and father figure to Tari, and had a good relationship with her back when Project Blue was still in development, he ended up subverting it by the time of Season 3, since he had no problem destroying her when she tried to stop him.
- Even when he said he will miss her, he doesn't seem to be sad about it beyond the fact that he was destroying perhaps his most impressive creation, so it is just mockery.
- Although he hired Evelyn, gave her the ability to warp into games, and treated her fairly, that was just to satisfy her needs and it was never even shown if he genuinely cared about her. The way they interact was purely out of sadism over mutual goals.
Season 2[]
- Under the disguise of Masa's neighbor, Sheridan planted a control bug onto his arm, allowing him to hack it and make Masa shoot Lucks, framing him for the latter's death.
- After Lucks' death and the departure of MD-5, he recruited Evelyn into helping her to get revenge on Tari.
- Although he had a justified reason for killing Lucks, he didn't do it out of disgust for Lucks' actions or to avenge the people he has hurt; it was only out of personal vengeance for Lucks stealing all the credit for his work, which means he did it to avenge himself than avenging what Tari and her friends suffered at the hands of Lucks.
Season 3[]
- He warped the minds of Belle and Masa into his server by performing brain surgeries on them, which he nonchalantly acknowledged the risk of.
- He frequently treats the A.I. version of Lucks poorly, constantly abusing him, and even made an achievement of killing him in the simulation.
- After Evelyn subdued Tari and brought her to the labs, her mind was painfully extracted by Sheridan in order to revive Lucinia.
- He forced Belle and Masa to fight the brainwashed Lucinia in one of their training sessions while gloating about having "fixed" her.
- At this point, Masa even sarcastically congratulates Sheridan for fulfilling his desire to outdo Lucks, but only by becoming way worse than Lucks ever was.
- Psychologically tortured Masa and Belle with the flashback of him killing Lucks before giving them a control bug which brainwashes them to work for him.
- His insanity reaches its peak when he begins warping every Meta Runner in Silica City to his own personal server, and watching them kill each other constantly for his own amusement.
- Planned to teleport every Meta Runner in the world into his server while their physical bodies are slowly and painfully drained away to the point that they will die if they remain in his server for a long time.
- When Masa was freed from his control and grabbed the doctor, Sheridan stabbed his neck with a screwdriver, which results in an explosion knocking both of them unconscious. When Sheridan regains consciousness, he tries to kill Masa again before getting interrupted by Tari breaching his server.
- Even when Tari tries to talk Sheridan out to stop his program and put everyone back in their bodies, he refuses to see the error of his mistakes and forces her to fight Lucinia.
- Attempt to shoot down Marco when he was cornered.
- In his final moments, he barks at Marco to let go of his head after he gets pinned down by him.
- Although his death was pretty gruesome as he was electrocuted to death by his own control bugs after being thrown into the computers of his own server and was burned to a crisp, it was absolutely well-deserved for all the heinous things he did. Not to mention that he was barking at Marco mere seconds ago before he was electrocuted.
Trivia[]
- Sheridan is one of two Meta Runner villains to be Pure Evil along with Evelyn Claythorne, which opposes to Tari, the only Pure Good of the series.
- Prior to Season 3, Sheridan doesn't seem to be Pure Evil, given he was the creator of Tari and have good intentions before the lab accident, which indicates his death. However, the end of Season 2 reveals that he was alive and was responsible for Lucks' death, making him a fully-irredeemable villain.
- He even met the Pure Good criteria respectively prior to Season 1 (not accounting the events of Meta Runner: SOURCE) which technically makes him the first Pure Evil villain to start off as a Pure Good before wholly debasing any Pure Good traits and becoming the polar opposite of Pure Good being Pure Evil.
