Dr. Bernard Merrick is the primary antagonist of the 2005 science fiction thriller The Island.
He is the founder and owner of Merrick Biotech, a company operating a vast underground facility where thousands of human clones, or "Agnates," are kept under the illusion that they are the last survivors of a desolate Earth awaiting transit to "The Island." Driven by megalomania, scientific arrogance, and a pathological God complex, Merrick orchestrates a cruel and highly lucrative scheme, treating the clones as nothing more than sentient spare parts for his wealthy clients in the outside world. His villainy is defined by his profound dehumanization of his creations and his willingness to commit mass murder to protect his ego and billion-dollar enterprise.
He was portrayed by Sean Bean.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Founds Merrick Biotech and creates the facility to mass-produce thousands of sapient human clones purely for organ and surrogate harvesting.
- Establishes the entire myth of "The Island" and the "lottery" system to deceive the clones, ensuring they remain docile and unaware that "winning" means their death and dissection.
- Weekly, he oversees the brutal execution and harvesting of aware clones (e.g., Lima's death after childbirth, Starkweather's death for organs).
- When Lincoln Six Echo complained about the facility and starts to question it, he subjected him to an agonizing operation to plant tracking microprobes directly into his eye, falsely telling the screaming clone it "won't hurt a bit."
- Upon discovering Lincoln and Jordan have witnessed the truth and escaped, Merrick orders his security teams to try and contain them, which quickly escalates to a full manhunt across both the facility and the outside world.
- Hires the ruthless mercenary Albert Laurent to find and capture the clones, commanding him to use any force necessary.
- This led to the targeted murder of the technician James McCord for daring to help the clones escape, resulting in McCord's death at the train station.
- The chase caused chaos and destruction as his mercenaries recklessly shot in public, smashing into a police car, and deliberately shooting down a huge building sign, which endangered civilian lives.
- At a meeting, he lies to his clients, pretending the Agnates are held unconscious in jelly sacs and "can't think or feel," to make them comfortable participating in murder.
- Coolly pulls out a syringe and injects a deadly substance on Gandu's neck, ending his life instantly for merely starting to question his surroundings like Lincoln.
- Rants to Laurent, proclaiming he has found the "Holy Grail" of science and that he is like a God for "giving life," justifying his actions as being "for the greater good."
- While he paid Laurent, this supposed "honor" of paying Laurent is dismissed as mere pragmatism, as Merrick showed no affection for him and Laurent had already completed his mission; this single transactional act does not outweigh thousands of murders and attempted genocide.
- After Jordon is captured, he reveals he will have Jordan Two Delta's organs harvested even though her original donor is going to die anyway (having brain damage), shrugging off the senseless killing.
- When the security of his scheme is threatened by the clones' growing awareness, he attempts to have all remaining clones in the area slaughtered en-masse and restart his operation (by injecting the new clones with Dehalcynate and incinerating the others).
- During the final confrontation, he wounds Lincoln with a harpoon gun, brags that he can take his life away just as he brought him to it, and then attempts to strangle him by his bare hands.
