The Door Gunner is a minor character in the 1987 anti-war film Full Metal Jacket based on Gustav Hasford's 1979 semi-autobiographical novel The Short-Timers.
He is a sadistic war criminal who serves the American military as part of the U.S. Marine. Unlike most of his fellow soldiers, who just go to the Vietnam War to serve their country, the Door Gunner is out to kill any all sort of Vietnamese people as much as he can. He has a bloodthirsty attitude that horrifies even some of his most ruthless comrades.
He was portrayed by Tim Colceri.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Taking advantage of his post as a door gunner, he mowed down and killed every Vietnamese he could see, including all civilians whether they run or stand.
- By his own admission, he had killed about a hundred and fifty-seven people, women, and children included.
- Not even satisfied with the huge amounts of people he killed, he mowed down the water buffaloes, killing 50 of them.
- When Joker expressed disgust for his crimes, he simply boasted about them and how due to his skill, a story about him should be made.
- Unlike the other soldiers within the film, who had clear redeeming qualities no matter how cruel and bloodthirsty they can be, the Door Gunner had absolutely none.
- Unlike the other characters in the film who preferred keeping the bloodshed on enemy soldiers and on the battlefields, the Door Gunner was the only one in the film that was seen willing to commit war crimes and kill civilians. This was portrayed as unacceptable, even for the hellish wartime setting.
- It's implied he'll never pay for his atrocities since after his introduction he's never seen again (though there's the chance he may have been killed off-screen).
Trivia[]
- The Door Gunner is, alongside Paul Mireau and the Overlook Hotel, one of the three Stanley Kubrick villains to be Pure Evil.
