Sam "Dogeyes" Lin is the secondary antagonist of the 2012 video game Sleeping Dogs and a major antagonist in its sequel DLC Nightmare in North Point, returning as a ghost and serving as the main antagonist of the mission "Revenge X2".
He is a drug trafficker and a prostitute gatherer for Big Smile Lee and a Red Pole of the Sun On Yee Triad as the leader of the Jade Gang, which is the rival of the Water Street Boys, led by his former childhood friend and fellow red pole Winston Chu. He is the archenemy of both Winston and the protagonist, Wei Shen.
He was voiced by Ron Yuan, who also voiced Liu Shen Tong in the same game.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General/Background[]
- In the past, he groomed Wei's older sister Mimi into prostitution for Big Smile Lee by getting her addicted to heroin, even personally beating, malnourishing and raping her "too many times to bother counting" according to Mimi's police report. Despite moving from Hong Kong to San Francisco in the hopes of kicking her addiction, Mimi tragically committed suicide 15 years later by overdosing due to severe PTSD.
- Even worse, Dogeyes knows full-well the effects his actions had on the late Mimi but doesn't care, mocking Wei about her fate at every opportunity.
- According to Winston and in-game police reports, Mimi was just one of countless victims in this regard, meaning Dogeyes has groomed and procured other girls the exact same way with the full support and backing of Big Smile Lee.
- In addition, his relationship with Big Smile Lee, another Pure Evil, is strictly professionalism at best.
- Despite Winston and Mrs. Chu claiming that Dogeyes used to be the former's childhood friend who regularly ate at the latter's restaurant, that's clearly not the case anymore; he's long changed into nothing but a greedy asshole since then.
Sleeping Dogs[]
- He wages a turf war across all of North Point in an attempt to take over Winston's territory, the Night Market, even after Dogeyes agreed to stay away in exchange for Winston giving him Siu Wah and a warehouse of drugs to operate in, which shows that Dogeyes is incredibly deceitful and breaks any and all promises however he pleases. During said turf war, Dogeyes has the Jade Gang start provocative conflicts such as:
- Distributing monthly supplies of ketamine, indirectly leading to shootings that kill several gangsters due to ripoffs.
- Extorting money from the local shop owners, karaoke club owners and minibus passengers under threat of assault.
- Shooting up Winston's mother's restaurant, the Golden Koi, killing two people and wounding a couple more.
- He shoots up Winston's wedding out of petty revenge for kidnapping Siu Wah and destroying his warehouse of drugs, killing Winston and his lovely wife Peggy along with several of the guests caught in the crossfires, and hospitalizing Uncle Po.
- In-universe, Wei and Uncle Po agree that this was a massive crossing of the Moral Event Horizon, even by Sun On Yee standards. While killing Winston was arguably fair game since he was a red pole, Peggy and the guests were all innocent people who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, not to mention the sacredness of weddings in general.
- When Wei chases Dogeyes down to a wet market, the latter cowardly puts as many of his own henchmen between them as possible instead of fighting Wei himself and reacts apathetically while watching the former brutalize every single one of them.
- When Mrs. Chu is about to kill him in revenge for her son, he feigns being sorry while cowardly begging Wei to save him, only for Wei to reject his plea while using a call-back to Dogeyes' very own "nothing personal, just business".
- His death at the hands of the very vengeful Mrs. Chu, while gruesome, is played for pure satisfaction and karma due to his personal villainy towards her and Wei, with nobody in-universe even really caring when he suddenly disappears.
Nightmare in the North Point[]
- Even after death, Dogeyes' actions continued to haunt Wei, further showing how much personal villainy he has caused towards Wei.
- After being resurrected by Smiley Cat, he lures Wei into his old drug manufacturing factory in an attempt to kill him.
- During the fight between him and Wei, he taunts the latter, goading about his vile acts and even claims to be having a sexual relationship with his sister in the underworld.
