| “ | I've never liked that name (John). It's so ordinary, especially for someone who has such big things in store. You know, a destiny! Oh, “Destiny.” I like it! Doctor Destiny. What do you think? | „ |

John Dee, also known as Doctor Destiny, is the main antagonist of the Justice League episode "Only a Dream" and a minor antagonist in the second season of Justice League Unlimited.
He is the ex-husband of Penny Dee. He was a thug in Lex Luthor's weapons racketeering business who used psychic powers to trap all his enemies in an endless version of their worst nightmare for the rest of their lives, planning to torture them as long as he can before the victims mercifully escape their torture by dying from the shock, with his main targets being the Justice League, who put him in prison.
He was voiced by William Atherton.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Helped in a weapons racketeering business with Lex Luthor.
- While very affable towards the guards in prison, always being helpful and even volunteering to help the scientist in the prison, it's very possible that this was just a facade solely to get on the prison's good side to get his parole due to his aspirations of being the one that defeats the Justice League.
- Later, he even traps an entire room filled with inmates and their guards in their worst nightmare for the rest of their lives to test his new powers.
- When his wife Penny leaves him, he tortures her for hours in her nightmares, proclaiming himself as Doctor Destiny.
- His torture of Penny doesn't even stop even after she gets sedated, and it gets so bad she eventually dies from the shock. He does all of this without a shred of remorse, ultimately subverting any care he may have had for her.
- He traps the Justice League in their worst nightmares, which have detrimental effects on their health. These nightmares are also very horrifying:
- Perhaps the worst case is with Superman, who in his dream, can't control his laser eyes and strength, causing him kill everyone close to him, burning his love interest Lois Lane with his heat vision and accidentally crushing his friend Jimmy Olsen's spine while hugging him.
- The second worst case is with Hawkgirl, who is trapped in a claustrophobic coffin and then buried alive. This is so traumatizing to her, as Hawkgirl nearly dies from the shock. In addition, since Hawkgirl has mental barriers in her mind due to the nature of her species, the other members can't help her.
- In Flash's dream, he is trapped in an initially silly world in which he, trying to get away from some cannibalistic children, goes so fast that the rest of the world ends up freezing (a nightmare he’s apparently always had). However, it stays frozen, so now he is trapped all on his own with no way to escape.
- In Green Lantern's dream, he is on another planet due to the ring, a place that looks like his home, but now he is no longer recognized by anyone. This is mercifully the least bad of all his dreams.
- When he finds himself unable to enter Batman's mind, he attempts to inject him with a powerful sedative.
- While he sides with Lex Luthor's faction when the Legion of Doom splits, this is only to survive, and this backfires as he is killed in the blast when Darkseid, another Pure Evil, blows up the ship. His death isn’t played for sympathy, but more as an afterthought.
Trivia[]
- Doctor Destiny is one of the four Pure Evil villains that debut in Justice League instead of from another show, along with the Imperium, Lord Orm and Mongul.
- It's subtly implied that Doctor Destiny rapes Penny in her dreams, due to Penny pleading him to stop while screaming in her sleeping state, but it is never stated what Destiny is doing to her, nor what Martian Manhunter sees when checking her mind, This wouldn't be surprising, as the DCAU's shows often included mild sexual content vague enough to pass the censors. If it were confirmed, it would make Destiny even worse.
