Diethard Ried is a supporting antagonist in the anime series Code Geass. He was originally a member of the Black Knights initially as the head of information, espionage, and public relations and following the restructure becomes Secretary of Media and Intelligence before finally defecting to Schneizel el Britannia.

He is voiced by Jouji Nakata (who also voiced Great Professor Bias and Megatron in Transformers: Cybertron as well as Hody Jones in One Piece) in Japanese and by Jamieson Price in English, who also voices Nemesis in Fire Emblem.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He joins Lelouch's rebellion for the sole purpose of documenting his rise and being entertained by the chaos.
  • He encourages Lelouch to assassinate Suzaku and manipulates Kallen into trying to do so behind Lelouch's back.
  • Despite Diethard being a journalist with no Geass or Code powers, without his instigation and recording, the wars or riots could not be as intense as they were.
  • He takes sadistic pleasure in broadcasting the footage of Euphemia's massacre (which he wrongly thought Zero had wanted) to incite riots across Japan.
  • He suspects that Zero has the power to control minds but keeps the other Black Knights in the dark about this, gloating that people are nothing but pawns.
  • While he seemed loyal to Lelouch and strongly argued against the Black Knights' betrayal at first, he still goes along with it and gloats that Lelouch will die before achieving his goals. When Rolo rescues Lelouch, Diethard orders the Black Knights to scramble and shoot them down, which causes Rolo's death as he has to overuse his Geass to fight them off. He then convinces the Black Knights to cover up their mutiny by lying that Zero was killed in battle.
  • He defects to Schneizel in order to witness his plan of launching nukes all over the world, which would kill billions. He even gloats to Lelouch how he was right in joining Schneizel after witnessing the destruction of Pendragon.
  • He tries to kill Lelouch when he turns the tables on Schneizel.
  • Despite wanting to die at the hands of Lelouch's Geass and was instead shot by Schneizel, it is not played for sympathy due to this scene showcasing his obsession towards the strongest.
  • He lives for nothing more than pure destruction, carnage, warfare and death.
  • Despite Code Geass' massive heinous standard, he manages to stand out in part because of his personal villainy towards Lelouch and his lack of resources.
