The age of worrying about what the gods think of us has come to a end. The kingdom of Zofia needs a strong will to set it back on course—MY will.
~ Desaix

Chancellor Desaix is a major antagonist of Nintendo's 1992 tactical video game Fire Emblem Gaiden and its 2017 remake Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.

He is a tyrannical and power-hungry baron who overthrew Zofia's royal family by murdering nearly the entire royal family, becoming the country's chancellor. He later became a ally to Emperor Rudolf of the Rigel Empire to ensure he remain in control of Zofia.

He was voiced by Go Shinomiya in Japanese and Dan Woren in English.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • When King Lima IV began making poor leadership choices, he prevented General Mycen from reasoning with the king numerous times, resulting in the general being distanced from the royal family, and Desaix's political influence was unchallenged as he took the king as his puppet.
  • He would have anyone who dares to criticize him either imprisoned or executed.
  • He began assassinating the children of King Lima IV and his consorts in order to secure his power over Zofia.
    • He would also frame one of the assassinations on Mycen, banishing him as a result.
    • In one of his assassinations, he ordered Slayde to cause a massive fire in the royal villa to kill all of the royal children resident there. To ensure there would be no survivors, he had hired assassins to go in the villa and kill every child and resident in the villa. Only Princess Anthiese and Prince Conrad survived, but the two were separated.
  • He made a ceasefire with Riegel in hopes of remaining in control of Zofia as the nation's chancellor, practically selling the nation to their enemy as a result.
  • He imposed heavy taxes across the nation, with those who opposed or were suspected of opposing their tyranny being executed immediately.
  • He led a coup d'etat and had all remaining members of the Zofian royal family, including Lima IV killed, leaving Anthiese and Conrad as the only survivors.
  • He had many villages and other smaller settlements outside of the capital become playgrounds for his thieves, leading to desperation and poverty, while ruffians gathered and expanded their reach as a result of Desaix's tyranny.
  • In the war with the Deliverance, he captured Mathilda, the wife of the resistance's leader Clive, and used her as leverage to force him to surrender, placing him and the resistance in a very precarious position.
  • He had an imposter battle against Alm and the Deliverance during the Battle of Zofia Castle, while he escaped to his fortress in Northern Zofia.
  • When Alm and the Deliverance arrived to rescue Mathilda, he decided to have her slowly executed by having his archers shoot at her.
    • Should Alm and the resistance fail to rescue Mathilda in time, Clive will be thrown into despair and lashes out at Alm, blaming him for her death. He remains in a depressed mood as a result, and in his ending, dies during a skirmish against pirates.
  • He tried to kill Alm and destroy the Deliverance one last time, but despite his best efforts, fails and dies as a result, cursing Mycen for giving the kingdom to Rudolf's "pup", having discovered the true heritage of Alm.
  • He tried to justify his crimes to the heroes, believing that he was capable of being a better ruler than Lima IV. While Lima IV was a terrible ruler due to his hedonistic nature, Desaix proves himself to be no better as he exhibits the traits of a power-hungry tyrant who is willing to commit all manner of atrocities in order to accomplish his goal.
  • As opposed to the majority of the antagonists in Gaiden and its remake, who were portrayed as sympathetic characters (e.g. Duma and Rudolf), Desaix has no sympathetic qualities and is portrayed as a selfish, greedy, and power-hungry tyrant.
