Pain is the loom upon which the cloth of the universe is woven. There is no life without pain, as there is no death without it. Embrace your pain. Let it guide your mind and thoughts.
~ Desaad's philosophy on pain.

Desaad is an antagonist in the DC Universe. He's a slick torturer working for Darkseid and is one of the three archenemies of Orion (alongside both Darkseid and Kalibak).

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Although he has a sad backstory of being a once-innocent child who was manipulated into killing his own pet cat and bird by Darkseid, it's outright stated that Desaad no longer has even a speck of goodness left in his soul (hence why he's unable to connect to the Source), thus keeping it from being a genuine tragedy.
    • He also never mentions his pets as an adult, indicating he was able to move on long past his grief.
  • At the behest of Darkseid's mother, Queen Heggra, he poisoned and killed the sorceress Suli, Darkseid's wife, whom he genuinely loved (back then at least).
    • Then, upon Darkseid discovering his act of treachery, Desaad poisoned Queen Heggra to save himself, thus becoming Darkseid's master inquisitor as he ascended the throne of Apokolips and making Darkseid lose the sole redeeming quality he still had and turning him into the power-hungry tyrant he is today.
  • He shows no true loyalty to Darkseid. At best, he's merely a sycophantic, cowardly bootlicker towards him. And at worst, he's all too willing to attempt to betray Darkseid despite being killed and resurrected by him multiple times.
  • As the name implies, Desaad is by far the worst torturer in the entire DC Universe:
    • First off, he's a sadomasochist. He created an electronic siphon that stimulates the wearer's cerebral cortex to make them believe their worst fears have come true, even allowing Desaad himself to share in said wearer's suffering.
    • On Earth, Desaad has his own personal amusement park called "Happyland," secretly imprisoning and torturing kidnapped innocents by the dozens via the rides and games.
      • Even worse, it's explicitly stated that Desaad plans to have a million slaves build a thousand more Happylands throughout the cosmos on the day that Darkseid finally attains the true Anti-Life Equation.
    • He once forced a woman on Earth to fully stop breathing, suffocating her to death.
    • He's often tortured superheroes as well.
      • One time, he forced Mike Schorr to watch while he inflicted horrible, indescribable pain upon the titular Amazon, to the point where she eventually passed out.
        • Another time, he tortured Kyle Rayner for hours, making him hardly able to move even after being set free.
  • He mind-controls a scientist into sabotaging a nuclear power plant, nearly turning Earth into a second Apokolips and thus killing millions.
    • He then offers to spare the planet, but only if Beautiful Dreamer gives him her young daughter, Maya.
  • One time, while merged with Orion, Desaad destroys a fleet of spaceships before combating the New Gods and Female Furies. This breaks the pact between Apokolips and New Genesis, thus starting an all-out war.
