Dennis Crim is the main antagonist of the 2011 film Shark Night 3D. He is Sara's ex-boyfriend and Red's former best friend.
He was portrayed by Chris Carmack.
What makes him Pure Evil?[]
- Although Sara states he wasn’t always as vile as he proves himself, he nevertheless had an inappropriate relationship with her because his job as her diving instructor. He’s also strongly implied to have a history of such behavior, which is part of the reason he got fired from his previous occupation.
- When Sara went off to college and broke off the relationship, she and Crim had one last swim. However, the air breather on Sara's mask malfunctioned and caused her to start to drown. When she swam towards him in an attempt to get his oxygen on, Crim swam away from her and made no effort to help her. It is heavily implied that Crim sabotaged Sara's oxygen to make sure she would drown, because he couldn't accept that she broke up with him.
- When Sara managed to make it to the surface, and entered the skiff to try to leave him, she accidentally sliced his face open with the propeller. Upon realizing what happened, Sara took Crim to the hospital. Despite the fact that Sara saved him from a possibly fatal injury, and being aware it was an accident, Crim still holds a vicious grudge against Sara.
- Crim is the major reason Sara did not return to Lake Crosby for three years, as the horrible memories of the accident is what caused Sara to blame herself for it and try to leave it in the past.
- It is also indicated that the horrible memories of how bad the romance with Crim went was what led Sara to have a very small social life, and to try to avoid romantic issues in general, as Malik tells Nick that he never saw or heard of Sara either going out to parties or hanging with anybody other than her dog Sherman. Tellingly, it is indicated in the film that Sara does in fact reciprocate Nick's feelings for her, but the bad experience with Crim has her be afraid to tell Nick this, due to fear of it being another bad relationship.
- When he steps in the diffuse the argument in the bait shop, he shows Malik the dreadful scar he now wears which badly disturbs him.
- Upon noticing Sara in her group of friends, he deliberately refused to speak or even acknowledge her, giving her the cold-shoulder the whole time.
- Talks Sheriff Sabin into helping him and allowing him to release deadly sharks into the local waters.
- With Sabin's help, Crim immorally captures numerous sharks to use for his project.
- Several people, including some of Sara's friends, were attacked by the sharks in the meantime before reintroducing himself.
- Tricks Beth and Gordon into getting on a boat with him and Red, both men intending to lead them both to their doom.
- Tries to force Gordon to jump in the shark-infested water and shoots him when he refuses, allowing him to get mauled to death by the bull shark and even reveals himself to be entirely responsible for them.
- Tells Beth the gruesome details about cookie-cutter sharks, taking sadistic pleasure in her escalating fear and forcing her to strip.
- When Crim stops Sara from stabbing Sabin with a kitchen knife, it is out of strictly pragmatic reasons, since Sabin makes sure no law enforcement officials realize what is happening and shuts the operation down.
- He makes Red throw Sara's dog Sherman into the water to be killed by the sharks out of nothing, but petty spite towards Sara for accidentally scarring him, and also just out of sheer annoyance over Sherman's barking.
- Has Sheriff Sabin tie up Nick to have him killed with another shark.
- He locks Sara in a shark cage to kill her the same way as Nick with a 8-foot great white and pulls out all his stops to try and kill them both when Nick escapes to confront him.
- Even though he thought about it for a second when Sara sincerely apologized and told him it was an accident, he still remains completely unrepentant for his heinous crimes. Furthermore, he only starts to show this brief remorse when Sara acts like she still loved him, indicating that his feelings for Sara were of a possessive quality, tellingly showing disgust at her interest in Nick.
- Although he was angered when Beth stabbed Red, he isn't protective of him. Later on when Nick holds Red at gunpoint, demanding Crim to bring Sara back up, Crim takes out a hunting knife and throws it in Red's chest, killing him.
- He fully intended to continue his snuff filming after getting his takes from his revenge scheme.
- Though him stopping the dispute between Red and members of the group seemingly paints him as more reasonable, him instances of mediation are out of pragmatism, given any altercations Red causes could alert the authorities and get his operation shut down.
