“ | You used to be so proud of your title as the most wicked demon. But that girl reduced you to a boneless wimp. But after 3000 years... Who do we have to thank for your returning to your current state? Ah yes... It's because every time you've chosen death and come to Purgatory... I've eaten the emotions growing within you! I trust you'll satisfy my hunger and thirst this time as well. This is also for both of our futures. | „ |

~ Demon King to the Sins. |
The Demon King is one of the two main antagonists (alongside the Supreme Deity) of the popular anime and manga series The Seven Deadly Sins.
As one of the first two creations of Chaos, along with the Supreme Deity, he is the supreme ruler of Purgatory, who's responsible for commanding the Demon Clan and the creation of the Ten Commandments. He is also the father of both Meliodas, the main protagonist of the series and leader of the Seven Deadly Sins, and Zeldris, the leader of the Ten Commandments. He is also indirectly responsible for the events that have occurred throughout the series, as well as serving as the villain of the penultimate arc.
He is voiced by Shōzō Iizuka in the original Japanese version of the anime and by Jason Marnocha in the English dub, who also voiced Bishop Ladja.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
General[]
- Despite being a demon as well as being Made of Evil, he does show clear moral agency and personality. Unlike many of the high-ranking demons, he has no sympathetic qualities and his only reason for terrorizing countless innocent lives is due to boredom and a superiority complex. It is also worth noting that he and the Supreme Deity teamed up to destroy their creator, Chaos, out of jealousy.
- If anyone was to ever oppose him, he would inflict an eternal punishment on them like endless torture or commit genocide on innocent civilians. This has resulted in the entire Demon Clan, and even his own sons, becoming fearful of him.
- He gained power by devouring his own kind, which counts as cannibalism.
- He is indirectly responsible for many of the demons downfall into villainy by forcing them into war. In the Cursed by Light movie, we see many demons wanted to take no part in the Holy War who suffered for centuries due to his actions.
- He states to Meliodas that bringing death and despair to others is his hobby.
- He refers to everybody as pawns to do the bidding of a god.
- He makes Purgatory an inescapable prison, causing residents to turn into mutated fragments of their former selves.
Background[]
- He and the Supreme Deity worked together to seal their creator Chaos away out of envy towards the latter's newest creation, mankind.
- He punished the Original Demon by splitting it into two halves, though to be fair it did try to steal his throne.
- He forced his son Zeldris to kill his lover, Gelda and her entire clan because he viewed Zeldris' love life as a distraction.
- During the Holy War, he killed Goddess Elizabeth and Meliodas, and cursed Elizabeth with eternal reincarnation as her punishment for defying the laws of the Goddess Clan, forcing her to repeatedly live life as a human, each of which would have her reunite with and fall in love with Meliodas, only for her to always die right before his eyes. Elizabeth had died 106 times before the anime series began because of this curse.
- He imprisoned Gowther for centuries because he disobeyed him.
- He joined forces with the Supreme Deity to unleash a fog of fire and lightning that destroyed Belialuin after Merlin tricked him into giving her a blessing without having her actually join his clan, leaving Merlin herself as the sole survivor. Though to be fair, Merlin did reject both gods and took their blessings but certainly her people don't deserve to die.
- Any actions caused by the Ten Commandments also falls under his shoulders too, as he created them before the story started.
Present[]
- He attempted to have his son's emotions trapped in purgatory for all of eternity.
- He possessed his own son Meliodas in order to make his body his own personal vessel to take over the world.
- He also intended to remove Elizabeth's curse of reincarnation just so he could kill her in a brutal manner and force Meliodas to see so he would lose his hope to live.
- In Meliodas's mindscape, he tried to convince him all of his friends were dead to destroy his hope.
- When failing to keep his host, he spends his last moments trying to damage his son as much as possible.
- He nearly kills Wild when Meliodas and Ban tries to escape Purgatory.
- He tried to kill Hawk for annoying him, claiming to damn him to be alongside with his older brother.
- He brutally injured his son, Zeldris for turning his back on him in an attempt to kill him.
- He also possessed his other son Zeldris, then killed Cusack. He cursed both of his sons in their own consciousness to make his plans go smoothly.
- In Zeldris's mindscape, he tried to show him a traumatic memory of Meliodas leaving him so he would lose hope, like he tried in Meliodas's mindscape.
- He possessed the land of Britannia to fight the heroes one last time, causing mass destruction and killing countless wildlife.
- This fight also caused the land of Camelot to be destroyed, which set up King Arthur's descent into villainy.
- He tried to kill Meliodas immediately after sparing him from death.
- While he accepted his defeat by Meliodas in a calm demeanor, he did not accept it in a remorseful way nor was it played for sympathy. It concludes that he chose to accept his fate without seeking redemption, showing just how petty he was, and he deserved to be hated by his sons.
