Extraordinary… You stand as a paragon of your kind, human. You fight like no man or demon I have ever known. Though this is not the end. My hate… never perishes. It is born anew in a cycle with no end! I will rise again! Those like you… those who share the blood of the goddess and the spirit of the hero… they are eternally bound to this curse. An incarnation of my hatred shall ever follow your kind, dooming them to wander a blood-soaked sea of darkness for all time!
~ Demise cursing Link's soul as well as Zelda's and Hyrule itself to be forever tormented by evil out of spite, foreshadowing his reincarnation as Ganondorf time and time again.

Demon King Demise (also known as The Imprisoned in his weakened state) is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Null) of Nintendo‘s The Legend of Zelda franchise, serving as the overarching antagonist of the 2011 action-adventure video game The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

He is the primeval King of Evil and the source of all the monsters plaguing Hyrule and the reason humanity was forced out of the Surface. Seeking the power of the Triforce to rule the world as a hellish wasteland, upon being sealed by the Goddess Hylia, Demise sends Ghirahim to find a means to revive him. He is also the original incarnation of the franchise's main villain, Ganon, who is Demise's dying curse of hate and bloodshed against Hyrule and the source of all the evil that made it suffer.

As Demise his vocal effects are provided by Takashi Nagasako, while as The Imprisoned, they are done by Tsuguo Mogami.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He sent monsters and demons across Hyrule, having them slaughter every living thing they see in an attempt at getting the Triforce.
    • This led to the near annihilation of humanity and forced Hylia to send all remaining humans to the skies to avoid any further harm at the hands of Demise's horde.
  • When the Goddess Hylia fights and seals him to ensure he doesn't wipe out the rest of humanity, Demise gravely injures her, forcing her to reincarnate as a mortal named Zelda.
  • He unleashes Ghirahim onto the world, having him commit all the actions that he does, for the sake of ensuring his seal is broken and he can be freed.
    • When Ghirahim succeeds, he rewards his servitude by forcibly turning him back into his sword form.
  • As The Imprisoned, he attempts to climb the pit to reach the Sealed Temple to devour Zelda's soul and return.
  • After retrieving his sword, he mocks Hylia's decision to reincarnate as a mortal, saying that her new appearance "pales in comparison to the magnificence of her previous form". He then attempts to kill Zelda by throwing her upwards with his magic, only failing due to Groose's intervention.
  • After inviting Link for a final duel, he promises that upon killing him, he will finish what he started and attack the rest of humanity, beginning with his friends and loved ones, and crush the world underfoot to make it his hellish domain to rule for eternity and leave the few terrified survivors his slaves.
  • While he does respect Link's courage as a warrior, Demise still is very condescending to Link and makes frequent taunts on his mortality.
    • This takes the worst when he curses Link and Zelda's soul to forever be tormented by the incarnation of his never-ending hate out of petty spite for Link managing to slay him, spending his final moments laughing as he does so, as he can't stand unambiguously losing and wants the final laugh.
  • He curses Link and Zelda's souls to forever be tormented by his reincarnation, Ganon(dorf), and doom them and all of Hyrule to "wander a blood-soaked sea of darkness for all time" as Ganon, who would become not only the series' primary antagonist, but also the most persistent source of tragedy and bloodshed that Hyrule will face in his numerous attempts to conquer the world through despotic means, with numerous other nasty villains such as Veran and Zant arising as Ganon(dorf)'s servants or pawns, as well as Yuga who seeks to revive and merge with Ganon for his own omnicidal ends, or even Null who required Ganon's likeness for his omnicidal plans.
    • Demise is unambiguously portrayed as the root cause of nearly all evil that persists in Hyrule being the source of the Demon Tribe on top Ganon, that he essentially becomes the very embodiment of the franchise's demanding heinous standard as a result.
  • While Demise is a demon, he has full moral agency as another demon in the same game named Batreaux in the same game is friendly and just wants to get along with humans, proving that contrary to popular belief, demons in the Zelda universe are not instinctually evil and therefore Demise is simply evil out of his own lust for dominance.

Trivia[]

  • Demise's final words are different in the Japanese version of the game where he instead claims that his demon army is cursed to hate the gods and their people, and will carry on his war against them. Regardless, Ganondorf is still described as Demise's reincarnation in Hyrule Historia, and such is also told in the non-canon video game, Hyrule Warriors.
