Do you see me now? Can you see me now?
~ Robey taunting Luther after plunging Piccadilly Circus into chaos.
(chuckes) Hello again, John! Do you know who that was? Oh, I'll bet you do. Oh, poor Callum. You know, I had him. Yeah, I had him tucked away, and I stood next to you at a bus stop. Offered you a mint, and you took it. I looked you right in the eye because I was curious. I wanted to know if you’d see it in me. Because, that is who you are, isn’t it? The man who knows all about people like me. But you didn’t see me. And now you are in a cage because I put you there. It makes me wonder how you’re gonna feel, having to watch what happens next.
~ Robey hinting at his sadism to Luther while torturing Callum, and his most famous quote.

David Robey is the main antagonist of the 2023 British crime thriller Luther: The Fallen Sun, which served as a film continuation of the television series of the same name.

He is a tech billionaire moonlighting as a serial killer who uses surveillance technology to manipulate and kill civilians as well as the archnemesis of John Luther.

He was portrayed by Andy Serkis, who also played Knull in Venom: The Last Dance.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Even before the film's events, Robey had already been basking in his sadistic nature for years, committing many counts of, rape, torture, murder, snuff filming, and blackmail.
  • At some point in the past, when his wife Georgette filed sexual assault charges against him, he horribly crippled and burned her, and now visits her everyday to haunt her with how he plans to terrorize the public.
  • Robey opens the film by kidnapping a teenage boy, Callum Aldrich, the latest in a string of them.
  • He then lures the parents of the victims to an isolated mansion where the bodies of their children are hanging from the ceiling for their parents to find. He then sets the building ablaze so their parents can watch in horror as their children burn.
  • Robey even watches from outside, staring into the window with a haunting mask to torture the parents even more.
  • Robey then reveals all of Luther's crimes to the public, putting Luther in prison.
  • He then sends a recording of Callum's dying pleas to Luther, taunting him for his failure to save Callum.
  • A few days later, when Luther and DCI Odette Raine confront Robey at Piccadilly Circus, he blackmails several people to create a distraction by jumping from high buildings, which leads to many car crashes, major wrecks, and citizens being killed in the ensuing chaos.
    • Robey even shows very notable sadism, chanting "BONG!" whenever one of his victims dies, and even taunts Luther by asking, "Can you see me now?"
  • Robey then slashes the artery of a cop to escape, which eventually kills said cop.
  • He then kidnaps the teenage daughter of Odette, Anya, tormenting Odette with sounds and visuals of her daughter apparently dying. He then threatens Odette to imagine Robey "enjoying himself with her."
  • When Georgette divulges some information about Robey to Odette & Luther, Robey then blackmails Archie Woodward, Raine's assistant, into killing Georgette. Because of this, Robey is indirectly responsible for Archie's suicide when he is caught.
  • Robey's endgame is to use dozens of men, women and children, taken from trafficking operations and other sources, in order to create his own "red room", dubbed the Red Bunker. He hosts livestreams where sadists like himself, worldwide, can vote on how each and every victim is going to be tortured and killed in the most agonizing way possible.
  • When Luther and Odette track down Robey's "Red Bunker" to an isolated mansion in Norway, they see that the frozen lake under it is filled to the brim with the hundreds of corpses of people Robey has raped, tortured and killed over the years.
  • Robey captures the two officers, and reveals Anya in another room, who would be suffocated unless Luther & Odette torture each other, which they mostly follow through with.
  • When Luther sees an escape, Robey seals Odette, Anya, and his own right-hand man in the room to burn so he can save himself.
  • He attempts to leave Luther to die in a frozen lake before Robey himself drowns thanks to the very corpses he has dumped into the lake all these years.
  • Despite his friendly nature with his right-hand man, Arkady, Robey doesn't care about him as he attempts to seal Arkadu away to burn so he can escape.
  • Unlike many other villains, Robey knows how diabolical and twisted he is, and he embraces it with joy.

Trivia[]

  • He is also the only Pure Evil in the Luther franchise.
  • While Robey goes against John Luther, Luther's actor, Idris Elba, also portrayed another Pure Evil, Brixton Lore.
  • To drive the point of Robey being Pure Evil, Andy Serkis considered him his 'darkest role yet', and even said that Robey is "not an empathetic person. He's a psychopath." The scene where Robey sadistically sings "I'm Coming Out" to his crippled wife, Georgette, was very disturbing for Serkis.
