~ David last words, before attempting to rape Ellie |
David is the secondary antagonist in the HBO post apocalyptic drama television series The Last of Us, an adaptation of the 2013 video game of the same name, serving as the main antagonist of the eight episode "When We Are in Need".
He is a spiritual leader of the group of cannibals who attempts to kill Joel Miller and keep his ward Ellie to himself. Though apparently the benevolent preacher of his survivor group, David secretly feeds his followers with human remains and has had an obsession for young girls even before the Cordyceps pandemic.
He was portrayed by Scott Shepherd.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He runs a group of cannibals where he and his men kidnap and murder survivors before feeding them to his people without their knowledge, which includes his own community members if they die. There is a scence of multiple hanging headless corpses hanging around a warehouse that Joel finds and an ear that Ellie finds in a cage.
- He’s responsible for Joel getting seriously injured after being impaled by a rebar and almost dying, and he attempts to lead his group to find and kill him for revenge against one of his men.
- Fed the unknowing group the corpse of one of the members killed by Joel, Alec and even had him fed to his wife and child.
- When Alec’s young daughter Hannah spoke out to want to kill both Ellie and Joel, he slapped her across the face for disrespecting him.
- Kidnapped Ellie and held her in a cage, and attempts to sweet talk her into keeping her as a pet, until Ellie broke his finger in which he attempts to kill her to serve her for her group.
- When Ellie kills James and burns the kitchen, David attacks her and pins her down before attempting to rape her, while saying that struggling is his favorite part, an act which traumatized Ellie horrifically. This and him stating his job was a teacher of a young girl, confirms his status of a pedophile and child rapist which was only implied in the games.
- While acting like a father to his men, he shows to not care for them, calling them “sheep” willing to have them eat meat of their own people without their knowledge and shows no care when James gets killed.
- While most of the other villains are anti-villains, tragic or extremist trying to do the wrong things for the right reason, David is shown to be a completely irredeemable monster who exhibits the worst in humanity.
Trivia[]
- In the lead-up to the premiere of The Last of Us, Neil Druckmann acknowledged that one of show's opportunities was to flesh out David's characterization much more than how he was shown in the original game, allowing the audience to look deeper at David as a complex human being. However, in the finished season, David shows himself to be just as bad as in the original game.
- It's possible, however, that this was the intention of the showrunners, as Druckmann and Craig Mazin later stated that their intentions were to humanize David and his environment and portray him like a good parental figure before revealing his true self, demonstrating himself to not be the "nicest" guy around.
