I've been one step ahead of you since you raided the warehouse. Every time I grabbed another target, I thought about you. And when they were screaming for mercy, I had a little laugh at your expense. Like I'm having a little laugh right now, because you think you've won.
~ Kern taunting Detective John Munch.

Darryl R. Kern is the main antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Manhunt".

He was portrayed by R.E. Rodgers.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He joined the army out of sadism, thinking that the sole purpose of the army was killing people.
  • He tortured, killed, and cooked a squirrel that the other soldiers were fond of, planning to make a hat out of it.
  • He pulled a butcher knife on a cook that jumped him for killing the squirrel.
  • After he was discharged from the army, he became a serial killer and serial rapist.
  • He gets National Guardsman Marvin Posey to become his accomplice and help him with his rapes and murders. He never cared about Posey and only wanted to make use out of him.
  • Kern abducts four women, drugging and forcing them into his green 4x4 Pathfinder. He rapes, tortures, mutilates, and kills them in a warehouse on Broome in Alphabet City, where he holds them captive for days.
  • He planned to create a new generation of people by impregnating female sex slaves and creating "foot soldiers" for an "impending race war".
  • He kidnaps Sarah Kimmel and imprisons her, repeatedly raping and torturing her and keeping her as his sex slave for a couple of days. She escapes under Posey's watch, which he considered killing him for. Sarah was left with severe trauma and PTSD because of this and had to sleep her lights on. She lives on disability because of what Kern did to her.
  • Kern goes up to Walden Falls and kills Posey's friend, Ernest Dillman, by slitting his throat from behind, so that he could use his cabin, and steals his ID and credit cards.
  • He goes to Tribeca and kills Arnold Cokely for his ID and credit cards and then rapes, tortures, and kills his wife, Amanda.
  • He continues to go back to New York to New York and Walden Falls to take more victims to make sure that the police cannot find them, taking a total seven victims.
  • He kidnaps diner waitress Annie Tassler and points his gun at her friend Butch Mcgee, forcing him to back off, knocking him down when he tries to grab Annie. He uses Posey, under the alias of Marty Porter to help him escape
  • He has Posey identify a different suspect in the police lineup to allow him to escape.
  • He tortures, rapes, and mutilates Annie, eventually killing her by shooting her in the face.
  • He kidnaps Ms. Michaelson and Jenny, a mother and daughter after carjacking them and plans to murder them.
  • He and Posey go to Fisher's Landing stop at a farmhouse to ask for directions, where Kern murders the elderly couple living in the farmhouse by slitting their throats. He holds Ms. Michaelson and Jenny prisoner there.
  • Kern blames Posey for attracting police attention and ties him up, leaving him dangling from the ceiling and brutally kills him by gutting him alive.
  • After his capture, he taunts Detective John Munch of the NYPD's Special Victims Unit about how he was always ahead of him and how he thought about him when he kidnapped his victims and had a laugh at his expense when they begged for mercy, convinced that Canada would not extradite him for capital offenses unless the death penalty was waived and that he would be able to avoid execution.
