“ | Had I known one human's death would pain you so, I would've killed more. And kill more I shall. Carry that agony with you to oblivion, Superman. | „ |
~ Darkseid mocking Dan Turpin's death to Superman. |
“ | I hope you appreciate, Kal-El, that everything that happens from this point is on your head. The skies will rain fire. The oceans will boil. The streets will run red with the blood of billions. Only then, after your last pitiful hope is extinguished, will I end your life. Let's go. | „ |
~ Darkseid to Superman before their final confrontation. |
“ | Your friends have abandoned you, or fallen before my might. Super or otherwise, you're merely a man. And I... am a god. | „ |
~ Darkseid. |
Darkseid is one of the two overarching antagonists (along with Brainiac) of the DC Animated Universe.
He is the absolute ruler of Apokolips and would-be conqueror of the universe, as well as the arch-nemesis of Superman and Highfather.
He was voiced by Michael Ironside.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In Genera/Background[]
- Subjugated Apokolips, enslaving and oppressing the population, such as forcing them to work in in slave mines and killing them for disobedience.
- Waged war against New Genesis, claiming millions of lives until a truce was finally agreed upon.
- Seeks to find the Anti-Life Equation, a formula that would theoretically enable him to control any and all existing life in the universe.
- Conquered many planets, reducing them all to hellish wastelands with the populations broken to the point where they have no will to be anything beyond his slaves.
- All the unfortunate planets that Darkseid couldn't conquer would all be destroyed by him.
- Darkseid has been doing everything in his power to ensure this process spreads to the whole universe if he doesn't have the Anti-Life Equation.
- Abused and neglected his son Kalibak.
- Though he apparently "loves" his son Orion and takes pride in him, this is twisted at the very least.
- He seems to love Orion's strength and ruthlessness more than himself and he shows no hesitation when trying to kill him for interfering in his plans in Justice League, scoffing on the thought of 'sparing the rod'.
Superman: The Animated Series[]
- In an effort to gauge Superman's power, he aided Intergang, supplying them powerful weapons.
- Ordered his servant Desaad to destroy Superman.
- Injured and incapacitated Superman before presenting him to the people of Metropolis defeated, and informing them of his great power and intention to enslave the whole planet like he did with many others to crush their spirits and have them submit to him otherwise he will have his forces destroy the planet.
- Invaded Earth, beginning with the massive destruction of a nuclear facility in an effort to recreate the fire pits of Apokolips.
- When New Genesis declared the planet off-limits, he subsequently killed Dan Turpin with his Omega Beams for standing up to him and to spite Superman.
- In the tie-in comic, he attempted to build the armageddon cannon to destroy New Genesis and use a supercharged Livewire to kill Superman and the people of Metropolis.
- Tried to destroy the Earth with a comet, using his Doomsday magnet to bring it there.
- Had Superman tortured before being brought before him, and then informing and taunting him about his plan of destroying his home with a comet.
- When the plan fails, he has Granny Goodness tortured for her failure, though Granny Goodness deserves this, in part due to the fact that he instructs the Furies (who Granny Goodness had tortured) to do so.
- Nearly killed Supergirl in front of Superman.
- Had Granny Goodnes brainwash Superman into leading an attack on Earth simply for the sake of turning him into a pariah, nearly allowing Lex Luthor and General Hardcastle to execute both him and Supergirl through lethal injections with Kryptonite and making the Earth's population on wondering if they should trust him again.
- This would eventually lead, in addition to the Superman of the Justice Lords' universe killing his Lex Luthor and taking over that universe's Earth, to the formation of Project Cadmus so the Earth could defend itself if the Justice League ever turned rogue.
- When Superman punched him for Dan Turpin’s death, he states that if the incident would affect him that much, he would have killed more people and would proceed to do it after killing Superman.
Justice Leaugue[]
- During the quest for the Anti-Life Equation, he orders his general Steppenwolf to lead an invasion in a sector that was protected by New Genesis, violating the rivaling planets' ancient peace treaty, only for Steppenwolf to run into an ambush and die. This ended up with Orion sending his ship into his palace, injuring him and weakening his defenses and forces.
- Worse yet, he admitted that he knew that going into the sector would violate the treaty, stating that is was a calculated risk.
- Tricked Superman into supposedly aiding him in a war against Brainiac, only to later reveal that he and Brainiac made a deal to deliver Superman to him in exchange for sparing Apokolips. He then betrays Brainiac and tries to use him to finally claim the Anti-Life Equation so that he can destroy the universe and remake it in his own image where free will is non-existent and everyone is his slave.
- When he used Brainiac he was also using Superman as a power source.
- Mentioned to have had his adopted son Scott Free tortured and brainwashed by Granny Goodness.
Justice League Unlimited[]
- After being unintentionally resurrected by Lex Luthor and his Legion of Doom, he tried to kill them by blowing up their lair after promising that their world would suffer.
- The blast killed all those who were frozen and those who didn't make it in time to be shielded, such as Doctor Destiny, another Pure Evil.
- After reunifying Apokolips, he invaded Earth again simply to make Superman suffer and stated that he will invade New Genesis afterwards.
- When he took over Earth, he launched simultaneous attacks across the planet and set up magma-tappers to ignite its core and generate fire pits, creating Apokolips on Earth, like he had tried to do previously.
- Threw the Daily Planet globe at Superman. crumbling the building and threatening the lives of everyone in it, including Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and Perry White.
- While trying to kill Batman with his Omega Beams, he remorselessly obliterated an injured Parademon.
- Though he showed surprise at his ability to avoid his attack, it is worth noting he tried to still kill him in a brutal matter regardless. As a way to test if Lex is lucky as well, he almost fired his beams at him though he ran away before he could.
- Trapped Superman in a net of energy that tortured him greatly and planned to use a Kryptonite knife to cut out his heart and put it on a pike inside his throne room.
- Although he called it an act of mercy, he was obviously mocking him.
Trivia[]
- Given his actions and the personal strife he has inflicted upon him, Darkseid is the only opponent in the entire DC Animated Universe whom Superman is openly willing to kill, with the only other foes who had such distinction being Reverend Amos Howell and Mongul. It is also implied that he is the only being Superman used his full power on.
