Dante Zogratis is a major antagonist in the Black Clover franchise. He is one of the main antagonists of the second saga, serving as the main antagonist of the Heart Kingdom Joint Struggle Arc and a major antagonist of the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc.
He is the second eldest of the Zogratis Siblings and the leading member of the Dark Triad, being the host of the Devil known as Lucifero. He is one of the arch-nemeses (alongside his brother Lucius, and Lucifero) of Asta, as well as the arch-enemy of the Black Bull.
He is voiced by Rikiya Koyama in Japanese and Patrick Seitz in English, who also voiced Dio Brando in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Overlord in Transformers: Prime Wars and Ghetsis from Pokemon: Generations.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- Generally, he is obsessed with the idea of malice, fanatically believing evil is "humanity's true nature" and the world is too dull for not giving in to their darkest desires and urges.
- His partnership with Lucifero comes off as superficial and he only allied with him for power, and his reaction was to express shock over losing his devil abilities and being rendered powerless instead of losing Lucifero himself.
- His relationship with his siblings, Lucius and Vanica, is too vague to know whether or not they cared about each other, however, he and Vanica have proven to have a mutual disdain for Zenon, calling him "weak" and making fun of him back when they were younger. Even in the present, nothing suggests their behavior towards him has changed, which is doubtfully likely.
- Any form of "respect" he shows to his opponents in battle comes off as him sadistically enjoying it and not above mocking anyone else. Even then he would act like a real sore loser over being defeated by a "mere peasant" like Magna.
Past[]
- Before taking over the Spade Kingdom, he was originally a soldier back then who went around killing dozens of people and had slept with women. Yet, none of these actions helped satiate his unusual habit of committing malice.
- He partook in the coup of the Spade Kingdom, along with Vanica and Zenon, where he killed Loyce Grinberryall, Yuno's father and the original monarch of the Spade Kingdom, and ultimately took over as its new ruler. After he and his siblings took over, Dante ruled over the kingdom's people with an iron fist, allowing his soldiers and men to outright murder or abuse anyone to their liking.
- For example, the Spade Kingdom's soldiers abused and tortured peasants to be used as living batteries to power their fortress Candelo, with at least one of the soldiers sexually assaulting a young mother.
- He and his siblings made a deal with Lucifero and his associates, allowing them to possess him and his siblings respectively with Lucifero being his host to be granted their abilities. In order to test their newly found powers, he sent his youngest brother, Zenon Zogratis, to attack the Diamond Kingdom and ended up killing likely hundreds of the Diamond Kingdom's Magic Knights.
Black Clover[]
- He was the one who formulated the ritual sacrifice of the Tree of Qliphoth, a magic channel, as a means to unleash Lucifero and countless devils onto the world to kickstart the annihilation of all kingdoms, which is 90% of the continent. Dante's intention in doing so was to create a world filled with only unbounded malice and overran by devils across the world and to do that, he needed to sacrifice two very important people, Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeanace.
- He sent his siblings, Zenon and Vanica, to attack the Clover Kingdom and the Heart Kingdom respectively.
- For Zenon, he was tasked with capturing William Vangeance, the Captain of the Golden Dawn, which ended up attacking the latter's base, nearly killing and injuring almost all of the squad members as a result.
- For Vanica, she was tasked to do as she pleased when she had personal business with the Heart Kingdom, which led to kidnapping Lolopechka, cursing Undine, and likely killing dozens to hundreds of the Heart Kingdom's populaces. This all in all makes Dante responsible for these attacks as part of his plans to perform the ritual.
- He decided to go after Yami Sukehiro and attacked the Black Bulls' Base, hoping to find and capture him.
- He offered and tried to make Vanessa Enoteca be his "woman and bride" out of seeing how useful her arcane magic was, then later does the same to Grey, whom he also saw her magic as something that should "belong to him only". This comes off as Dante intending to have both Vanessa and Grey marry him by force and given his experiences of sleeping with several women, he demonstrates his misogynistic and controlling behavior towards the former.
- He impaled Gauche Adlai during his fight with Asta, all just to provoke him into unleashing his Devil form and boast about his "point" of how evil is humanity's true nature.
- Angrily pummels Asta to a pulp to the point he knocked him out cold just for simply landing a slash onto his face out of pettiness.
- Tried to capture Yami when he appeared on the battlefield, only to fail when Asta defeated him easily.
- During the Tree of Qliphoth's gates opening, he fought Jack the Ripper and Nacht Faust sadistically and tried to prevent them from intervening with the ritual. Later followed up by fighting Magna Swing and Zora Ideale, with whom he mocked the former into putting him in his "place".
- Upon being defeated, he refused to accept this and tried to make an effort to kill the Magic Knights in a desperate attempt.
Trivia[]
- He, alongside his sister Vanica Zogratis, are the only two out of the Dark Triad to be Pure Evil.
