People can say there is a balance, a logic that everything happens for a reason... but the truth is far less designed. No matter how hard you work, when you die, you die. Some spend their entire life trying to scratch their way to the top, and still die in poverty. While others are born into wealth without ever working at all. It's a cruel and random world, and yet the chaos is also beautiful.
~ Dante explaining her ideology to Edward Elric.

Dante is the main antagonist of the Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 anime series.

She is the mother of Envy and the true leader of the Homunculi, who plans to extend her life forever with Philosopher's Stones. She also plans to serve as humanity's protector like a god, by preventing selfish humans from being able to use the Philosopher's Stone for their own selfish actions, ignoring the fact that she is human herself and not truly immortal due to her decaying body as the result of transferring between people so many times.

She was voiced by Cindee Mayfield and by Monica Rial while inhabiting Lyra's body. In Japanese, she was voiced by Kazuko Sugiyama and by Yumi Kakazu while inhabiting Lyra's body.

History[]

This section is too long. Visit here for more details: Dante's Synopsis on the Villains Wiki.

What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]

  • 400 years ago, created a Philosopher's Stone by sacrificing the lives of people condemned as witches and who were dying of plague.
  • Responsible for the destruction of two ancient cities, using their populace to create more Philosopher's Stones.
  • Took possession of multiple people throughout the centuries and jumped into their bodies to extend her lifespan.
  • Manipulated many of the Homunculi, feeding them Red Stones and tricking them into helping her make a Philosopher's Stone by convincing them she'd use it to make them human, when in reality, she only planned to use the Stone to jump to another body.
  • Though it appears that Dante holds some form of affection towards Izumi Curtis, one of her students, this relationship isn't shown extensively, and it's implied that Dante was just using her to manipulate the Elric brothers.
  • Weakens Greed, one of the homunculi and her creations, which allows Ed to easily and unintentionally eliminate him.
  • Through Pride, started the Ishvalan War and multiple other conflicts with neighboring cities and nations, resulting in the near extermination of the Ishvalan race and other countless deaths.
  • Attempts to use the conflict in Reole to create another Philosopher's Stone, and has Pride order the military to attack and sow more chaos.
  • Orders Pride to attack Drachma, a country in the North, to cover her tracks and plans to use the chaos to silently assassinate Roy Mustang and his allies.
  • Took possession of the body of one of her students, Lyra.
  • When she reunites with Hohenheim, she licks her arm and notes she hasn't had the opportunity to test out her new body, wanting to lustfully and shamelessly engage in intercourse with Hohenheim using Lyra's body.
  • Abandons any love or affection she once had for Hohenheim by sending him through the other side of Gate, using a child as a sacrifice to do this.
  • Planned to transfer her soul into Rose's body as an attempt to gain control over Ed using Rose's feelings for him, replacing Hohenheim as her lover.
  • When seeing Gluttony despair over the death of Lust and preventing him from eating, Dante eliminates his human mind, leaving only his ravenous hunger intact and making him a mindless monster in order for him to eat Alphonse's Philosopher Stone.
  • When Ed refused to aid her, Dante sent him through the Gate as punishment.
  • Uses Rose's newborn child to open the Gate and have the Gate Children dismember Wrath's right arm and left leg because he wanted them to use the Philosopher's Stone to resurrect Sloth.
  • She lets her son Envy, the very first homunculus created from the failed human transmutation of her dead son who died of mercury poisoning, kill Ed in front of Alphsone, Wrath, Rose and her newborn child, before Alphonse uses the stone to sacrifice himself in order to bring him back.
  • Holds no love for her own son, Envy, only viewing him as an enforcer for the other homunculi and showing no grief over his disappearance. Of course, Envy never cared for Dante either, so this is relatively minor.

Trivia[]

  • Dante doesn't appear in the manga or the 2009 anime adaption barring a short cameo of her elderly form in episode 58 of the anime, but it's certain her role was replaced by Father.
