Cypher Reagan is the secondary antagonist of the 1999 science-fiction film The Matrix and a posthumous antagonist in its 2005 spin-off video game The Matrix Online.
He was a human released from the Matrix by Morpheus. However, Cypher hated the real world, and after nine years on the Nebuchadnezzar, he decided he had to get back into the Matrix by selling Morpheus and the Nebuchadnezzar's crew to Agent Smith and the Agents.
He was portrayed by Joe Pantoliano.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He had grown disillusioned and hated Morpheus for not warning him about the truth behind the red and blue pills, even though Morpheus told him that if he took the red pill, he would show him "how deep this rabbit hole goes".
- He went to Agent Smith and asked him to be put back into the Matrix as a famous actor or politician, showing he does not care about the lives lost in the rebellion.
- He allowed Agent Smith to capture Morpheus to get the access code to Zion, knowing full well that Agent Smith was going to destroy Zion, which would result in the genocide of the last free humans, totalling up to 250,000 people.
- He killed Apoc, Dozer, and Switch, and tried to kill Tank.
- Although Tank initially survived the attack, he ultimately succumbed to his wounds sometime after the first movie.
- He attempted to murder Neo just to test Morpheus' theory that Neo was the One.
- Despite saying that he has feelings for Trinity, he still said he would kill her after killing Neo.
- Although Agent Smith and The Analyst did much worse than him, they have higher resources since Cypher was just a regular human, while Smith and The Analyst were both very powerful Matrix programs with superpowers.
