Stuart: No, I think we can find something in between. Watch this. |

Colonel William Stuart is the main antagonist of the 1990 action thriller film Die Hard 2, the second installment of the Die Hard franchise.
Originally a senior United States Army Special Force colonel, he went rogue and became a terrorist leader who aimed at freeing the tyrannical Ramon Esperanza from custody and escaping with him from the U.S.A. to earn money.
He was portrayed by William Sadler, who also played Wilson Concannon in The Hills Run Red.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- During a snowstorm, he sabotages the electricity at Dulles International Airport. This endangered several planes that were running low on fuel and couldn't land because the communications system was unusable.
- He has an innocent old man murdered so his team can set up shop in his church.
- He holds a gun to Miller's head because he "let" Cochrane die, threatening to kill him if he fails again.
- Note that he didn't particularly care about Cochrane dying since as he says "damage is minimal" so his reason was purely pragamtism as he probably still needed his men alive. For the time being at last.
- He also doesn’t care about Major Grant, despite Grant being his mentor. As the latter was fighting with John, Stuart did nothing to help Grant at all.
- He deliberately causes Windsor Flight 114 to crash just to punish John for trying to fix the communication tower, killing all 230 passengers and crew onboard, which makes him the villain with the highest kill count in the Die Hard series. He also threatens to crash other planes again if his demands aren't met.
- He does nothing to help his friend Major Grant when he's fighting John, but he watches the fight with a smile on his face, resulting in Grant gruesomely being sucked into the plane engine and killed.
- Despite claiming to be fighting against communism, this is a pretty weak excuse to betray his country, especially since the person he frees from U.S. custody (General Esperanza) is a murderous drug-dealing dictator. Also, the events of the film happen in 1990, when the Cold War almost ended, which makes his motive even more petty and paranoid.
- Overall, he stands out as the most evil character in the Die Hard franchise, as he comes across as more vile and despicable than even another Pure Evil from Die Hard, Hans Gruber, who was far less petty and has some funny lines and completely lacks any xenophobic or sadistic traits.
Trivia[]
- William Sadler takes it as a great compliment whenever someone says how much they hated his character and what he stood for, showing that even he saw Stuart as an irredeemable bastard whose death can be gladly cheered without shame.
- Also, the scene where he organized the crashing of the Windsor Flight 114 was so brutal and gruesome that Die Hard 2 almost got an NC-17 rating.
- William Stuart and Hans Gruber are the only Die Hard main antagonists to be Pure Evils.
