Colonel Otto is the main antagonist of the 2022 Spanish-French adult animated film Unicorn Wars.
He is the former leader of the teddy bear army who set out to have all of the unicorns killed, creating the war between the teddy bears and unicorns in order for him and his associates to maintain power.
He was voiced by Kepa Cueto.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- As the utmost leader of the Teddy Bear Army, he's the one held accountable for all of the killings they caused. He intended to cleanse the forest of its "curse" by having all of the unicorns that inhabit it killed.
- To do this, he believes that he must condition his men to view the unicorns as savage killers, perpetuating a rewritten prophecy surrounding an ancient god amongst his people, claiming that the unicorns stole the land from the bears. He directs a priest he hired, the Father, to preach it to his soldiers. The rewritten prophecy gives the false promise of granting the one who kills the last unicorn godhood.
- When he promotes Bluey to lieutenant, he spells out his ulterior motives to him, saying that by continuing the war between teddy bears and unicorns, he and the other leaders can maintain power over the land the bears had inherited, showing that he is not an extremist and that he is directing the genocide of the unicorns purely for the sake of obtaining power.
- As part of the archery training at his camp, it is suggested that the unicorns be shot in the neck; that way, they suffer as long as possible before they die. This is shown to be true later, as when Coco shoots Carmen in the neck, she appears to be in agony before she drops dead.
- Despite viewing unicorns as inferior to teddy bears, he views his own people scornfully, especially those of a lower class.
- His recruits are subjected to the rather harsh and dingy conditions of his camp, where love and affection of any kind are highly discouraged.
- It is also implied that Sergeant Ironstroke's seemingly harsh and abrasive personality was actually enforced by Otto, as the scene where Otto assigns Ironstroke the mission shows that Ironstroke is afraid of him, sweating as Otto threatens that he'll risk losing his chances of being promoted if he fails.
- For lunch, his recruits must eat some sort of disgusting fly-infested porridge, which is never reconsidered, even if they complain. In contrast, he and the two other leaders, Commander Fluffy and Captain Snout, are shown to be eating actual food in the very next scene.
- While he seems to be nice to Commander Fluffy and Captain Snout, nothing suggests Otto cares for them, and he could just be giving them privileges due to their administrative skills.
- His recruits are subjected to the rather harsh and dingy conditions of his camp, where love and affection of any kind are highly discouraged.
- He sends his newest recruits, who prove themselves to be unfit for the military, out into the forest to find the Lone Owl squad, despite knowing that they won't survive the mission, deeming their disappearances as "collateral damage." This leads to the horrific deaths of a majority of the soldiers.
- When he sees one of his soldiers get badly injured from a gunpower blast, he shows no concern about this and also deems this "collateral damage".
- When a majority of the soldiers die and/or disappear, Otto sends a team out to find any survivors. Upon finding an injured Bluey, who is then brought to the hospital, it is then revealed that Otto had done this, sending his men out into the forest and all, as a means of further promoting his cause, despite all that he put his soldiers through, by creating an "idol with clay feet" out of Bluey, propagandizing his "bravery," and promoting him to lieutenant.
- He also makes up a few stories surrounding Bluey, such as how he "killed seven unicorns and drank their blood," even though Bluey failed to kill a single one.
- While he appears to be briefly horrified at Bluey’s scar, it’s not out of sympathy but cowardice, as he goes back to yelling at him soon after.
- While he was against Bluey burning down the Magical Forest, it was only because it'd get in the way of his ulterior motives for conquering it.
- After Bluey tells Otto to look deeply into his missing eye, this is painted as him "looking into the abyss," as the movie shows a zoom-in of Bluey's eye from Otto's point of view, which then changes to a shot of a mounted unicorn head that Otto had presumably killed. This is meant to serve as a reflection on how Otto isn't different at all from the unicorns, which his administration painted as savage beasts. Upon seeing Bluey's "hell," instead of reflecting on his actions, Otto just yells at Bluey for questioning his authority, solidifying that he'll do anything to maintain his power, regardless of who he hurts or how much damage he does in general.
Trivia[]
- He is the only Unicorn Wars villain to be Pure Evil.
- It is implied that Otto may have killed more than a few unicorns by himself and even takes pride in it, as evidenced by at least two unicorn head mounts that are found on the camp, one of which is in his office. When Bluey questions Otto about his experience with the Magical Forest for deeming it "paradise," a mounted unicorn head, implied to be a trophy of his, is zoomed in upon. Additionally, Otto seems to take great offense at Bluey for deeming him inexperienced. If this were the case, this would make him worse than he already is.
- Some fans of the movie theorize that Corporal Pompom, the messenger of the teddy bear Army, is the grandson of Otto due to his age and the fact that Pompom is visibly traumatized after the coup, as well as the fact he has a comfortable position in the army. If the theory was confirmed it could prevent him from Pure Evil as that means he possibly loves his grandson enough to give him a comfortable job.
