“ | No, no. There's no risk! They never come back... as... BOYS! | „ |
~ The Coachman's most famous quote to Honest John Worthington Foulfellow and Gideon about his crimes. |
“ | QUIET! You boys have had your fun! Now, pay for it! | „ |
~ The Coachman to the boys on Pleasure Island. |
The Coachman is one of the main antagonists of Disney's 2nd full-length animated feature film Pinocchio, which is based on the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by the late Carlo Collodi.
He is a cruel, greedy, and sadistic man who transforms misbehaving young boys into donkeys and sells them off for slavery whilst making himself a profit. He hired Honest John and Gideon to lure lazy and rebellious boys in Pinocchio's village who don't want to go to school so he can bring all of them to Pleasure Island to be transformed into donkeys to sell into slavery.
He was voiced by the late Charles Judels.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He hired con artists Honest John and Gideon to bring boys to him to transport to Pleasure Island on his behalf, promising to pay them fully well if they succeeded, though it's very unlikely he paid them so much considering that Pinocchio (due to the lack of time in late evening and with no one else around) was the only child they could find and take to the Coachman.
- However, he clearly only paid the duo for pragmatic reasons, as he shows no care for them, and even John and Gideon are shown to be scared of the Coachman and his antics. If anything, he scares them into working for him since they already knew too much and they deeply involved themselves in the business, whether they wanted it or not.
- Acted like a kindly old man to little boys and took them to Pleasure Island, where he laced the cigars and beer with a substance that turns them into donkeys.
- Sold kids who were transformed into donkeys in unpleasant working facilities, including salt mines or circuses. It's implied he keeps the donkeys who could still talk as his own personal slaves, considering that when he took the boys to Pleasure Island on his carriage earlier, donkeys were pulling said carriage as he whipped them.
- Profited from selling boys into slavery and took sadistic pleasure from torturing children for wealth. Despite the boys being badly behaved, they did not deserve the cruel punishment he inflicted on them.
- He has no regard for his goons, as he whips them for his own sick amusement.
- Compared to the other villains in the film such as Stromboli, Honest John/Gideon and Monstro, the Coachman easily stands out as the worst, since the other villains do not pass the baseline villainous standard, not to mention all of them barring Stromboli suffer from Fridge Horror.
- Unlike most other Disney villains, the Coachman is never punished for any of his horrible actions.
Trivia[]
- He can be considered as a type of devilish antithesis to the benevolent Blue Fairy, given whereas she teaches the boys to behave better, he simply encourages them in the opposite path and destroys their lives for their misdeeds.
