Quilty: Where the devil did you get her?

Humbert: I beg your pardon?
Quilty: I said, "The weather's getting better."
Humbert: Seems so.
Quilty: Who's the lassie?
Humbert: Um; my daughter.
Quilty: You lie, she is not.
Humbert: What?
Quilty: I said "July was hot."

~ Clare Quilty speaking to Humbert Humbert.

Clare Quilty is the main antagonist of Vladimir Nabokov's controversial 1955 novel Lolita.

He is a famous playwright and secret child pornographer who is an affiliate of Charlotte Haze and her 12-year-old daughter Dolores. He secretly desires to have Dolores star in one of his films, and after her mother dies and she is abducted by another pedophile known as Humbert Humbert, Quilty begins stalking them with the intention to manipulate Dolores into running away from Humbert to be with him.

In Stanley Kubrick's 1962 film adaptation of the novel, Quilty was portrayed by the late Peter Sellers. In Adrien Lyne's 1997 film adaptation, he was portrayed by Frank Langella, who also played Skeletor in The Masters of the Universe live-action film.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He is a serial pedophile, producing child pornography and looking for children who can star in his films.
  • Despite Charlotte considering him a friend, he shows no sadness over her death and, in general, tries to avoid it while attending the party that she hosts.
  • Following Charlotte's death, Humbert begins repeatedly raping her daughter Dolores and goes on the run with her. Quilty begins stalking the two of them, but not to expose Humbert or save Dolores, but instead because he wants her to star in one of his child pornography films.
  • When Humbert and Dolores settle in a new town and Dolores begins attending school, Quilty poses as the school's psychologist so that he can manipulate Dolores into the school play and see her perform.
  • He calls Dolores on the phone after the play and convinces her to run away with him. She pretends to be sick, so Humbert will take her to the hospital, at which point Quilty poses as her father to check her out of the hospital and run away with her.
  • Now that he has gotten Dolores away from Humbert, he asks her to star in one of his films, and when she refuses to do so, he throws her out.
  • Humbert eventually tracks Quilty down and confronts him about stealing Dolores from him, to which Quilty shows no interest. While being held at gunpoint, he attempts to run away, and in the 1962 film, he actually offers to show Humbert a snuff film, showing that he at least owns snuff films and possibly produces them.
  • While Humbert is a sick monster himself, Quilty is perhaps even worse than him (which is really saying something), given that he doesn't only molest/rape children but also records it in order to produce child pornographic movies and actively seeks out children to act in his movies with no remorse at all whatsoever.
