Charlotte Ermengarde is the posthumous overarching antagonist of the horror visual novel The Letter. She was the founder of Luxbourne City and the owner of the Ermengarde mansion until she commited suicide due to being hauted by the spirit of her deceased maid.

What Makes Her Pure Evil ?[]

  • While she appears generous in front of people and freed Takako from slavery, this is just a facade to be seen as a good person.
  • When Takako saw her cheating on her fiance with another man, Charlotte has her locked up and raped by her men all while watching sadisticaly.
  • When Eduard discovored what Charlotte did to Takako and wanted to leave Charlotte, she had him killed alongside Takako's cat in front of Takako while forcing the latter to watch.
    • This shows that Charlotte never truly loved Eduard and was just obssessed with him.
  • She made the townpeople believe that Takako killed Eduard which caused Takako to be sentenced to death by burning.
  • Her actions caused Takako to become The Ghost who will kill many people and torment the protagonists.
    • Furthermore considering that after her death, her soul fused with Takako's, it's possible that she was in a way responsible for the Ghost crimes.

Trivia[]

  • Due to the lack of explanation in the game, it is unknown how much influence she had on the Ghost when her spirit fused with Takako's, so whether or not she was the one in control of the Ghost or just influenced it is ambiguous. If it was proven that she was the one in control, that would make her much worse.
