Charles Rane is not insane.
~ Rane's mantra.
Dwight Henderson: The two agents you killed on the plane were friends of mine.
Charles Rane: Thank you for telling me. I do enjoy knowing the people whose lives I've touched.
~ Charles Rane sadistically mocking FBI Agent Dwight Henderson about his fellow colleagues' deaths.

Charles Rane is the main antagonist in the 1992 action thriller film Passenger 57.

He is a powerful, deceptive, traitorous, and ruthless terrorist leader and drug lord who desires to continue to terrorize the globe and to prevent capture and being placed in prison for his crimes.

He was portrayed by Bruce Payne.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He gruesomely murdered his own father, commenting to his escorts that "he died violently".
  • He gets involved in the narcotics industry.
  • He wrecked and derailed airlines and train stations across the globe, causing massive fatalities and injuries in the process for no other motive than to hide his tracks and also because it was fun.
    • Three of his bombings in London were even stated to have taken over sixty lives.
  • He slit the throat of a kindhearted doctor who was about to give plastic surgery to him.
  • He endangered the doctor's staff and random citizens outside by shoving them in an attempt to evade arrest for his crimes.
  • He bashed the head of Attorney Philips on a table and forced him to not give the pleading of insanity.
  • He hijacked Flight 183 and took everyone as hostage, forcing them to either comply to his demands or they would die, shooting Captain Whitehurst to death when he stated he's in charge.
  • He ordered his second-in-command named Sabrina Richie to shoot the FBI agents Manning and Duncan who was escorting him onto Flight 163, casually mocking an FBI agent named Dwight Henderson about their deaths later on.
  • He coldly shot a random passenger who had a daughter dead after forcing him to tell him his name and that he has a daughter while making John Cutter watch.
  • He killed one of his own henchmen named Allen who was bested by John Cutter, noting that he despises incompetence, holding another passenger as a hostage in the meanwhile.
  • He murdered five hostages via telling his minions named Forget to do so when the law enforcement refused to comply with his demands in time, planning to repeat it every time they don't work with his requirements.
  • He pushed several innocents at the fair in harm's way when John Cutter chased him around, shrugging off one of his minions named Matthew's death in the process when Cutter pushed him off a ride.
  • He ordered his henchmen to kill the remaining hostages should he not be released from custody and let back on Flight 163, casually remarking that it'll take a long time for the law enforcement to clean up the remains.
  • He had Vincent shoot the new escorts and wound Agent Henderson and a couple more agents.
  • He attacked Marti Slayton and tried to rape her, even gloating that he's going to kill her during the rape.
  • He had another passenger killed and made Marti open the door to frighten her while smiling evilly.
  • He tried one final time to strangle and murder John Cutter when he foiled Rane's plans.
  • During the final fight, he elbowed a flight attendant.
  • Although he had an awful childhood thanks to his abusive father, he isn't motivated by it in the slightest and hurts countless others who didn't do anything bad to him at all, which proves that it isn't a prevention.
  • Although he let half of the passengers/hostages go free, it's firmly pragmatic as he wanted the FBI to know that he isn't simply going to kill them all and he still threatened and murdered them whenever he wants, even ordering the remaining passengers to be shot at if the FBI didn't let him escape and get back on the plane.
