“ | The age old question: why do devils tend to men? To try sully their hands with evil? The answer is remarkably simple. For a devil, compelling those who do good deeds to do despicable acts, well there is no greater pleasure. Since the dawn of time, nothing has held more allure for mankind than wrongdoing. Consequently, it is depicted in the Bible as a sin; a forbidden delight; the true essence of evil is the pursuit thereof. When pure it transcends the vigors and morals established by man. The Lord of Crime's sins are banal, merely based on societal conventions. Whereas I am evil incarnate. | „ |
~ Milverton boasting about his evil when organizing the murder of the Whitley household |
Lord Charles Augustus Milverton is the main antagonist of the 2016 manga series Moriarty the Patriot and the second season of its 2020 anime adaptation.
In public a media mogul that owns various newspaper firms, in secret he is a powerful blackmailer and crime lord that seeks to topple British society so he can take over, masterminding the Jack the Ripper murders through a secret cult he formed. This places him at odds with the more noble William James Moriarty, becoming his rival as the lord of Crime as Milverton seeks Moriarty's complete destruction for his own gain.
He was voiced by Kenji Nojima in Japanese and Kayleigh McKee in the English dub.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Unlike his rival, William James Moriarty, Milverton overall lacks any of the remote sympathetic and noble aspects to his characters as he proclaims himself the embodiment of evil, to show the contrast between "necessary evil" and "pure evil".
- As the self-styled King of Blackmailers, Milverton, for mere amusement, uses secrets to force multiple people to commit heinous crimes such as murder and then has all loose ends tying to him killed off by his giant assassin (who crushes them to death), leading to the ruination of his victims and all those affected in the crossfire. This earns a special level of revulsion from Sherlock as Milverton has destroyed dozens of lives across his tenure just for his own amusement.
- Forming a cult of fanatics loyal to his classist ideals, Milverton organizes the Jack the Ripper murders, where several prostitutes in Whitechapel had been butchered gruesomely.
- Ultimately seeks to use the Ripper murders to cause a conflict between the citizens and the police, leading to a huge revolt that will spread across all of Britain and bring death & destruction galore that tears it apart, so that from the ensuing chaos he can seize control.
- When informed about people plotting to stop his entire Jack the Ripper plot in the manga, Milverton leaves his team behind as in his words, sacrifices to get details on his enemy, which turns out to be William James Moriarty.
- Threatens the gravely ill mother of Officer Bartholomew Fowler so that he can force him to kill the bomber hired to kill Lord Adam Whitely, before having him brutally executed by his minions by having his giant henchmen crush his head with his bare hands.
- Scoffing at Lord Whitely's desire for equality, he tries to have his very life destroyed by forcing Inspector Sturridge to kill Adam's disabled younger brother and all the servants he was closely acquainted with under the threat of killing his wife and daughter, just so Whitely can murder Sturridge in rage and destroy his reputation as a result. This prompts Whitely to ask Moriarty to assassinate him so that he can die a martyr.
- Upon realizing Moriarty is a rival to his bid for control, tries his best to ruin the lives of William and his 2 brothers using his newspaper firm.
- Blackmails Mary using information from her youth that will lead her to be unfairly imprisoned in France and ruin her marriage with John H. Watson, just to get to Watson's best friend, the great detective Sherlock Holmes.
- Ultimately forces Sherlock and Moriarty to turn on each other by having Sherlock arrest Moriarty for Mary's sake or he'd otherwise expose Moriarty in his newspaper firms.
- Overall, he stands out as the cruelest and most evil villain of the series to the point where William James Moriarty, an affably noble demon, shows no courtesy, not even that of a fake nature, to the blackmailer and even tries to kill him immediately, contrasting from his usual polite nature that he shows to everyone else, even to his victims to whom he gives at least some faux-affable charm to despite orchestrating their deaths. This shows that Moriarty himself, a serial killer who targeted the corrupt aristocracy out of disgust, sees Milverton on a greater level of evil compared to all the other antagonists in the story. Even Sherlock himself, who is generally against murder and sees William's killings as wrong, goes out of his way to shoot Milverton out of pure disgust to his evil nature which further solidifies his Pure Evil status.
