Capitaine Chantel Shannon DuBois is the main antagonist of DreamWorks Animation's 24th full-length animated feature film Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted.
She is a French animal control officer from Monaco who relentlessly pursues the animal protagonists, along with her men, so that she can mount their heads as trophies, particularly Alex the Lion. When DuBois first meets Alex, she became his arch-nemesis.
She was voiced by Frances McDormand. In the video-game adaptation of the film, she was voiced by Alanna Ubach.
What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- She is very much aware that the animals she is hunting down are sentient:
- She witnesses them perform several acts which display their sentience. She sees the main characters driving a car while they are trying to get away from her, she sees monkeys driving a plane, she sees a monkey being able to operate weapons which shoot bananas at her and she sees King Julien and Sonya driving a motorcycle. She doesn't seem particularly surprised by any of these occurrences which indicates she was aware of the animals' sentience even before the events of the film.
- It is also shown on several occasions that she is aware about how intelligent the animals she is chasing are. For example, she correctly deduces that the animals are trying to get away from her by joining a circus, so they could blend in and hide from her. She also sets up an ambush in front of the New York Zoo because she correctly predicts that Alex and his friends are trying to return there because that's where they grew up. She is also the only human to directly talk to Alex. These instances further show that she is aware the animals are sentient and can strategise.
- She doesn't care about her henchmen and only keeps them around because they are useful or as personal tools, as when they get taken out during the chase throughout Monaco, she doesn't seem concerned about their well-being, calling them "stupid bozos". While she later goes into their hospital room and heals them by singing to them, it's only done because they are still useful to her and she needs them to capture the animals, and her tearing up by the end of the song doesn't prove she cares for them either because she only tears up due to how beautiful her song is and not because she is sad about what happened to them.
- Although she has many comedic moments, her crimes are still treated seriously and none of the other characters in the film perceive her as a joke. Her being a sadistic serial killer of animals who collects their body parts as trophies is never played for laughs, she is presented as competent and dangerous, none of the other characters within the film find her funny and they are terrified of her and even some of her comedic moments are used to further establish her as a threat even though they are funny like the scenes where she crawls on four legs to smell the scent of the animals she is chasing are used to show that she has the unique skill of being able to track the animals from a great distance which further establishes her as a threat and makes her appear more dangerous even though the scenes are portrayed as funny.
- Although Dave is technically more heinous since he attempted genocide on several species, she has way less resources than him being just a regular animal control officer with no access to advanced machinery.
Background[]
- Even as a young girl, she displayed psychopathic tendencies, with her explaining with pride to her henchmen how when she was 7 she has strangled her first parrot, flushed her first goldfish and punched her first snake, with the body of her snake is even shown on-screen and she uses it to put pencils inside its mouth.
- Ever since then, she killed many animals for fun and took their body parts for her collection, with her sadism leading her to start a career as an animal control officer for the chance of legally killing more animals, keeping a collection of dozens of animal heads and other body parts hanging on the wall in her office and wanting to add a lion to her collection because she believes this would be the pinnacle of her career.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted[]
- When she heard about Alex, Marty, Gloria, Melman and their friends causing trouble in Monaco, she was delighted because Alex is a lion and she could cut off his head and add it to her collection, taking her henchmen and chasing after the animals with the intention of killing them all.
- She just shot King Julien without hesitation.
- After Alex and their friends manage escape in Monaco, she won't simply give up easily, she goes after them and won't stop until she gets Alex no matter what.
- Even after the animals went outside her jurisdiction in Monaco, DuBois continued to look after them and try to kill them because she is obsessed with the idea of acquiring a lion head.
- When she realised that the animal gang hid with a circus, DuBois decided to get to them, and when she saw King Julien and the bear Sonya driving a motorcycle, she stole a police motorcycle to go after them because she believed they would lead her to the circus, and after this backfired on her and she was ambushed by police officers, she shot darts at them which caused all of them to pass out except for one who got lucky because DuBois ran out of darts.
- Inside her prison cell she dug a hole and tricked the guards into jumping inside so she could trap them and escape, and after getting her henchmen back, they went after the circus where the gang hid, trying to get to Alex and cut off his head.
- When she and her gang show up middle of circus, she reveals owner that front everyone that Alex from zoo which it upset others that Alex and others was lying whole time.
- When Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria reached the gates of the New York Zoo, DuBois ambushed them and shot darts which caused them to pass out before trying to saw off Alex's head, only stopping when other people arrive and they think DuBois has returned Alex with DuBois deciding to play along.
- During the ceremony to celebrate Alex's return, she tried to kill Alex by shooting a poisoned dart at his direction.
- When all the animals managed to get away from her except the sea lion Stefano, she captured Stefano and tried to kill him out of frustration.
- When Alex returned to save Stefano, DuBois made one final attempt on his life by trying to take his head off.
- Her fate of being treated like an animal, tranquilized by Skipper and put into containers along with her henchmen to be shipped off to Madagascar is comedic but also played for satisfaction given her crimes throughout the movie.
Trivia[]
- She is currently the only Madagascar villain to be a Silly Pure Evil, as nearly all the other villains are too standard and/or redeemable to count, with the only other sufficiently heinous villain, Dave, having a sympathetic final moment that prevents him from being a Silly Pure Evil.
- Since the franchise has no Straight Pure Evils, she is also the only villain to be Pure Evil at all.
- She is the first Pure Evil to come from a non-original DreamWorks film, as Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted is a sequel.
