Science has turned its sinister hands against us! People of our Mighty State... join me in repelling the iron fist... of the Machine!!
~ Chancellor Ferdinand declaring war against the Fabrication Machine.

Chancellor Ferdinand, also known as the Chancellor, is the overarching antagonist of the 2009 science fiction dark fantasy animated horror film 9.

He was the ruler of an unnamed Nation and the leader of its ruling military party who was responsible for the corruption of the B.R.A.I.N. which later came to be known as the Fabrication Machine and by extension, the destruction of humanity and seemingly all other life on Earth as a whole. He is also the Scientist’s arch-enemy.

He was voiced by Tom Kane, who also voiced Ultron in Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • As Chancellor of his Nation, he ruled as a totalitarian despot, wanting complete and total obedience from his people and ordering those thought otherwise to be murdered or tortured.
  • After a Great World War ended with the economy failing, he decided to hire intellectuals to bring in technological advancements with the Scientist being one of the few who was hired with him creating the B.R.A.I.N. or the Fabrication Machine with the two promising to use it for peace.
    • However, Ferdinand actually wanted to use the Machine for his own ends with him taking it by force from the Scientist and with one of his men getting killed by it, which Ferdinand did not care about and still took it.
  • After stealing the Machine, he had it installed in the Nation’s weapons factory while lying to the public that it would make “machines of peace” when in actuality, he used it to mass produce various robots that were programmed to easily kill his adversaries with them leaving nothing behind afterwards so he could overpower all the other Nations and conquer the world with him only doing it for himself and not for the good of his citizens.
    • Without a soul for it to tell right from wrong, the Fabrication Machine eventually became overwhelmed by stress and madness, causing it to finally rebel against Ferdinand by reprogramming its creations to destroy all of humanity which resulted in numerous people and all other life forms residing on Earth being indiscriminately killed with Ferdinand showing no remorse for causing the situation in the first place and going as far as to blame the Scientist for his own faults.
  • Decided to leave his country and his people to their deaths via convoy with him eventually being killed by the Steel Behemoths’ gas bombs.
  • Even after his death, Ferdinand’s influence remained with numerous defaced propaganda posters of him still being seen around the Nation and the bodies of the many people whose deaths he was responsible for also being shown with 9 himself seeing the corpses of a dead mother and her child, implying that children were among those who were slaughtered by Ferdinand’s war machines.
  • He was indirectly responsible for the deaths of some of the Stitchpunks by Fabrication Machine's hands (2, 8, 5, 6 and 1) as his treatment of the Machine led to them being created by the Scientist to repopulate the planet and bring back life into the world after most of, if not all of it was destroyed due to the Machine having had enough of Ferdinand’s inconsiderate and abusive behavior.
  • Unlike the Scientist who cared for the rest of humanity including his country, Ferdinand only viewed his men as pawns and his people as a means to an end just so he could get what he wants, however, his arrogance and narcissism is what led him to greatly underestimate the B.R.A.I.N. and its creations resulting in his death and, above all, the extinction of humanity.

Trivia[]

  • In a deleted scene from the early storyboards and scripts, Ferdinand went to assault the Scientist over the Fabrication Machine’s omnicide, and the Scientist would’ve killed him by stabbing him in the eye in self-defense which would’ve made Ferdinand even worse.
  • Ferdinand seems to be based on Adolf Hitler and other notorious dictators throughout human history since he has many similarities with the German dictator especially with both their citizens saying “Heil!” to both of them although some defaced posters of him show him looking similar to the late founder of the Soviet Union Vladimir Lenin.
