| ~ Catalina betraying Claude in the beginning of GTA III |
Catalina is the main antagonist of the 2001 video game Grand Theft Auto III and a supporting antagonist in its 2004 prequel Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
She is a criminal in Red County, and later the leader of the Colombian Cartel in Liberty City. She is also the cousin of Varrios Los Aztecas leader Cesar Vialpando and Claude's ex-girlfriend-turned arch-nemesis.
She was voiced by Cynthia Farrell.
What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- Her relationship with her cousin Cesar Vialpando is heavily ambiguous as she was not even aware that Cesar was the one who brought CJ to her as CJ himself doesn't mention Cesar's name to her. Plus, it's never shown as to whether or not she got along with Cesar in the past, and Cesar himself was never aware about Catalina's heavily depraved nature (and even if he did, it's still unknown if he's shown concern to CJ regarding Catalina's extremely depraved actions). Because of this, her relationship with her own cousin remains unknown.
- Although she did mentioned Cesar's name, it still remains a mystery if Catalina actually got along with her cousin in the past or not.
- Although she implies that her step-father didn't give her anything beside stale bread while her step-brother could eat chocolates when she was young, this doesn't make her tragic due to it being left unexplored how much her past affects her and the severity of her crimes completely outweighing it.
- She is more than happy to betray anyone for her own personal benefit, including even her own "boyfriends," as evidenced when she shoots Claude and leaves him for dead during a bank heist.
- While she is treated in a more-or-less darkly humorous manner in San Andreas, by GTA III she is completely devoid of comic moments and is treated as a very serious threat. Furthermore, her comedic moments in the former game aren't detracting, as they only emphasize how psychotic and cruel she is.
- Although the Heinous Standards of Grand Theft Auto is very high, Catalina still stand out due to her actions of selling drugs which cause people to go insane and having some junkies become suicide bombers are still unique, paired with her personal villainy towards Claude.
- Additionally, she lives in the 3D Universe and thus doesn't have to compare with Peter Dreyfuss, Dimitri Rascalov and Avon Hertz in HD Universe and Hans Nemesis in the 2D Universe.
San Andreas[]
- Killed many of her boyfriends, evidenced by the gravestones near a pink slip in Red County.
- Fends off two men with a knife at The Welcome Pump in Dillimore shortly before their meeting with Carl Johnson.
- Escalates robberies where she murdered civilians and killed cops around Red County mainly for her own personal amusement. The onscreen robberies include:
- Threatening the employee and robbing the Gasso filling station in Dillimore by stealing a nearby tanker and its trailer.
- Killing the robbers and taking their money stolen from Top Hat Liquor store in Blueberry.
- Destroying the safe at Inside Track betting shop in Montgomery, stealing the money inside there, and killing some customers.
- Robbing the Palomino Creek Bank and killing some deputies.
- Threatens to kill CJ and later rapes him by putting him through an extreme form of BDSM.
- Although she claims to "love" CJ, there's nothing that indicates she truly loves him, especially considering that she threatens to kill CJ and later violently rapes him in her cabin, and such "love" is more likely a sick obsession of her part.
- Furthermore, even if her feelings for CJ are truly genuine (albeit in her own twisted way), by GTA III she seems to have completely moved on with this and doesn't even mentions the time when she was CJ's girlfriend, as she last calls CJ while having sex with Claude to spite him.
GTA III[]
- She betrays and shoots Claude after a bank robbery for being, according to her, "small-time," leaving him for dead, which results in him getting arrested, despite how loyal he was to her. Additionally, she also shoots a Cartel member dead , an indication that she doesn't care about her own gang.
- Makes a deal with the Triads to distribute SPANK drugs in Portland.
- She turns some of her soldiers to act into as suicide bombers through the SPANK drugs, causing their insanity. This also happens even in her death, assuming the player hasn't completed King Courtney's missions yet.
- Distributes SPANK by using the Uptown Yardies to sell it.
- Shoots Miguel in the back for being too much of a coward to defend against Claude, leaving him indirectly to be brutally tortured by Asuka Kasen.
- Distributes SPANK drugs disguised as coffee vendors all over Liberty City, causing those who consume it to lose their sanity.
- Kills Asuka Kasen and Miguel out of spite for revealing the Cartel's information to the Yakuza.
- Kidnaps Maria Latore as bait for Claude to give her the drug money and then dishonors the deal she makes to Claude by ordering her henchman to kill him after she got the money.
Trivia[]
- Catalina is, alongside Nicole Horne, one of the two Pure Evils of Rockstar Games to be female. In fact, both characters have several similarities.
- Both are based in New York (Liberty City is basically the New York of the GTA Universe).
- Both are the main antagonists of their respective games, both of which were released in 2001.
- Both sell highly-addictive drugs which turn their users into homicidal-maniacs (Catalina with SPANK and Nicole with Valkyr).
- Both are killed in Helicopter crashes.
- She is the first (and currently only) GTA Pure Evil to be female, and is also the first GTA Pure Evil in the 3D Universe. If following the chronological order, she is also the last character from the 3D Universe to be Pure Evil after Marty Jay Williams.
