~ Carl Henderson after torturing Gary Matthew Bryson. |
Carl Henderson is one of the two central antagonists (alongside his wife Sandy) of the 2011 gothic crime novel The Devil All The Time and its 2020 film adaptation of the same name. He is a serial killer who abducts hitchhikers so they can have sex with his wife before killing them.
He was portrayed by Jason Clarke.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- At the beginning of the film, he met Sandy and called her beautiful, leading to their relationship. However, his future treatment of Sandy as his wife revealed that he actually never saw her as a person, but rather as property.
- Coerced Sandy into becoming a rapist, as well as his partner in crime.
- Implied to have abducted, tortured, and killed numerous men after marrying Sandy.
- Abducted a hitchhiking preacher named Roy Laferty and tried to intimidate him into having sex with Sandy so he could take pictures. When Roy refused, Carl shot him in the head without hesitation, even after hearing of his daughter.
- Abducted a Military Private named Gary Matthew Bryson and forced Sandy to rape him.
- After Gary's rape, Carl would shoot him in non-fatal parts of his body just to watch him cry.
- It is implied that Carl shot Gary's genitals due to the amount of blood in that area.
- Killed Gary and took pictures of his body before leaving his corpse in the woods.
- He happily drank and celebrated Gary's death, while Sandy felt guilty.
- Emotionally manipulated Sandy to make her lie about the murders and didn't care to see she was upset.
- Lied to Sandy and gave her a gun with blanks because he wanted to be the only one of the duo to kill someone. This is also putting Sandy's life in danger, proving he doesn't care for her.
- Abducted Arvin Russel and tried to force him to have sex with Sandy, leading to his death.
- Unlike Sandy, who died as a scapegoat, Carl died as a manipulative and power-hungry sadist.
Trivia[]
- Carl can be considered the overarching antagonist of the film, since his murder of Roy Laferty was what allowed Preston to become a priest and for most of the movie's events to occur.
