Captain Maximillian Morton, better known as The Shepherd, is the overarching antagonist of the Kingsman film series, serving as the main antagonist of the 2021 historical action/spy film The King's Man.
He is the leader of the secret society called The Flock, which plots to orchestrate The Great War in order to eradicate England from the map. Initially disguised as a hapless English military captain, he is later revealed to be a vengeful Scotsman wishing for retribution against England for their crimes against his country.
He was portrayed by Matthew Goode.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Orchestrated the entire Great War in order to wipe out England as retribution for their treatment of his people in Scotland, more specifically his own family who had their business shut down by English noblemen, consequently he ends up responsible for the millions of casualties the war had.
- While this might appear to be a sympathetic motive at first Morton goes too far in his own goals and is too blinded by his own rage to truly care about the consequences of his actions and how they affect the greater world beyond England meaning it can't be used as a mitigating factor. It's also made clear that Scottish soldiers are fighting in the war, showing that Morton cares nothing for the lives of his own countrymen. His relationship with his family is not expanded upon aside from a single sentence.
- Ordered the murders of Franz Ferdinand and his pregnant wife to start the war.
- Abused and intimidated his less loyal cohorts such as Rasputin into subservience and expecting them all to kill themselves without hesitation should they fail in accomplishing his goals by placing a cyanide capsule in each of their rings.
- While he is more respectful and forgiving towards his other cohorts Erik Jan Hanussen and Mata Hari, this is likely due to them being zealous and loyal allies to him.
- Blew up a boat containing his own superior officer and faking his own death to compromise the British military.
- Had Grigori Rasputin and Erik Jan Hanussen abuse their positions in Russia and Germany respectively in order to puppeteer the actions of the Romanovs and Kaiser Wilhelm II, meaning he's not only partially responsible for Rasputin's control and abuse over the Romanovs but also the Kaiser's efforts in the war due to Hanussen's manipulations.
- Mistreated, abused and even killed some of his own goats in fits of anger.
- Ordered Vladimir Lenin to start Bolshevik Revolution, and being responsible of death of Romanov family.
- Killed his fencing partner in a fit of rage upon learning that Hanussen's task with the Zimmermann telegram had backfired.
- Had Mata Hari seduce the US President to keep him out of the war.
- Fight Orlando and Shola; shooting the latter in the shoulder after attempting to kill Orlando and brutally fighting Orlando himself through means such as swordplay and throwing a grenade at him.
- Almost succeeded in killing Orlando before being incapacitated by the goat he mutilated the horn of earlier in the film, allowing Orlando to turn their battle and hold him at his mercy.
- Taunted Orlando over how killing him would go against his pacifistic morals before the latter does so anyway to avenge his son.
