Captain James Bartholomew Hook is the main antagonist of Walt Disney's Peter Pan duology films.
He is a pirate captain of the Jolly Roger in Neverland who seeks revenge against Peter Pan for cutting off his hand and feeding it to a crocodile. He is also the boss of his pirate crew including Mr. Smee and the archenemy of Peter Pan.
Despite losing his hand to Peter Pan, it doesn’t serve as a motivating factor for his crimes considering he was already a ruthless pirate before Peter cuts it off.
Not to mention, the Lost Boys, the Darling kids, and Jane all had nothing to do with Hook losing his hand to begin with, and yet, he still attempts to kill them since they serve as Peter Pan’s allies, showing he has a deep hatred for children.
Even though he still retains his cowardly and comedic nature, he subverts his bumbling traits and becomes far more competent as he almost succeeded in his goals in the sequel.
Because his men want to go back to pirating, he stands out as the only one who truly wanted to get rid of Peter Pan himself.
He is a horrible boss to his minions and that explains why he has a hard time keeping a permanent pirate crew, even having no problem killing or insulting them for their failure or incmpetence.
While he did have some honor when he offered to pardon the Darling children and the Lost Boys if they join his crew, promised Tiger Lily to go free, considered Peter Pan an worthy opponent, he subverts these later on, especially in the sequel.
Although both films end with him having slapstick defeats where he’s chased away from Neverland by the Crocodile and later the Octopus, he completely deserves it for how far he goes with his crimes.
Overall, Captain Hook has a deep hatred for Peter Pan and does anything he can to get rid of him, even if unprovoked by Peter and the Lost Boys.
Peter Pan[]
He tried to figure where Pan's hideout on map until he realized Indians knew more island than his map, he ordered Mr. Smee find Tiger Lily so she can lead right to Pan's hideout.
He murdered one pirate for annoying him by playing the accordion by shooting him with a derringer pistol.
He abducted Tiger Lily and tried to force her to reveal the location of Pan's hideout, which got John, Michael and the Lost Boys incriminated by the Natives.
When Tiger Lily refused to say a word, he attempted to drown her and would have succeeded in doing so, if it weren’t for Peter Pan and the Crocodile.
He ordered Mr. Smee go back to island and capture Tinker Bell bring her to him, and he manipulated Tinker Bell into revealing the location of Pan's hideout after he banished her.
He locked Tinker Bell in a lantern to prevent her interference after he reveals the location of Peter's hideout.
He and the Pirates had all the children abducted, once Peter Pan takes a break. Hook also sent Pan a bomb to kill him and destroy him. Due to this, it caused Tinker Bell to be severely wounded by warning Pan.
He attempted to kill all 6 of the Lost Boys along with the 3 Darling kids by forcing them to walk the plank and drown at sea or become pirates.
He threw one of his crew members, Gentleman Starkey, overboard after being informed by him that there's no splash.
Once disarmed, he begged Peter Pan for his life, and when this latter turns around, he tried to kill him with his hook and if it weren't for Wendy, Hook could have killed him instantly.
He attempted to feed Jane to an octopus. He wanted also that Peter Pan and Tinker Bell die in the attempt to save Jane.
He threatened to make Mr. Smee walk on the plank.
He manipulated Jane by inciting her to find his treasure in order to ambush Peter.
He attempted to kill all the lost boys along with Peter Pan by making them walk the plank. When Peter Pan order to him to release the lost boys as last will, he reveals he has no intention to spare them.
He attempted to steal as much treasure as possible.
After Jane freed Peter and the boys, Captain Hook attempted to kill her and would have also succeeded in doing so, if Peter Pan didn't interfere.
Trivia[]
It's been theorized by fans that he is the cause of the assassination of Ariel’s mother, Athena; if this turns out to be true, it would have made him worse and would have made him the overarching antagonist of the Little Mermaid franchise.
Even if this meant he'd have to compete with Ursula, he would still stand out as he has less resources than her, given the fact that he is a mere pirate, while Ursula has a vast amount of resources to her disposal, such as magic contracts, spells, and even once had control of Triton's trident.
This is the only version of Hook to be Pure Evil, however, the 2003 version is planned to be proposed to be Pure Evil (even if the 2003 version is considered as PE by TV Tropes).
It is unknown if his original counterpart from the original novel by JM Barrie is Pure Evil or not.
He is also the only male Pure Evil to be the main antagonist of a Disney film that was released during Walt Disney's lifetime and is the only Silly Pure Evil to be the main antagonist other than the Queen of Hearts whose film doesn't come with a Pure Good protagonist.
There are some factors that could affect Hook's PE status.
In Return to Neverland, Mama Hook was seen with a hook on each arm and a mustache like her son, but in Jake and the Never Land Pirates, she has hands instead of hooks for hands and no mustache at all, implying that Hook may have dressed up like his mother to manipulate Jane in the former. However, in the episode "Little Red Riding Hook!", Captain Hook makes a reference to his mother's Return to Neverland design, while the Jake and the Neverland Pirates isn’t canon, Hook's disguise as her looks identical to her design in Return to Neverland. If it was confirmed that Mama Hook was in the Picture from Return to Never Island, Hook would no longer count due to caring for his mother.
It’s been theorized Hook used to be a lost boy and he was trying to stop Peter Pan from killing lost boys when they got older and he trying to drown and feed Wendy to the crocodile was an bluff, if it was confirmed, he wouldn’t be PE due to being tragic, anti-villainous, and having care for the deceased lost boys.
In the novel Never Never: A Tale Of Captain Hook by Serena Valentino, Hook was only just an baby when he went to Never Land, he attempted to befriend Peter Pan who cuts his hand off and fed it to the crocodile, and Peter Pan did it so James would have become a pirate and amuse Pan. If it was canon, Hook wouldn’t count as PE due to being tragic and he did die in Return to Never Land, as the novel reveals he died by the Kraken and Neverland is a realm of the Dead, which would explain why Hook is afraid of the Octopus in Return to Neverland as it caused his death.
He doesn't count as Pure Evil in the Pirate Fairy, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, and the Disney’s Peter Pan video games due to having too many redeeming features.
