Bullflay is the secondary antagonist of The Legend of Luke, the twelfth book in the Redwall novel series. He is the sadistic slavemaster of the ship Goreleech who carries out the slavery on the creatures captured by the ship's captain Vilu Daskar through his raids and subjects them to torment throughout it as well, constantly whipping them left and right while they row the oars and starving them to the point of emaciation, all the while taking sadistic amusement in it. He serves as Ranguvar Foeseeker's arch-nemesis due to this.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- As the slavemaster of the Goreleech, he takes charge of the treatment of the creatures Vilu Daskar often brings to the ship as slaves, subjecting them to what's easily one of the worst types of slavery within the series, constantly whipping them left and right while starving them to emaciation, causing them to become hollow-eyed and ragged, barely alive in some cases, all the while deriving sadistic enjoyment from their suffering.
- The conditions he subjected them to would be so awful that many of the creatures would die from them to the point where the bottom deck would be named the Death Pit.
- He would even torment them in his own spare time, whipping them either just for talking or for his own amusement, withholding drinking water, taunting the sick, and generally enjoying the misery he heaped without mercy on them.
- When Vilu Daskar brings in 36 new oarslaves to the ship, he would help him dispose of 36 old ones by finding the sickest and weakest through testing their strength by taking charge of having them haul a log up high while whipping them before having whoever fails to haul it walk the plank after Vilu sails the ship far away from any shore so that they would either drown to death or be devoured by the big fishes for his and Vilu's own sick amusement.
- Informed by Vilu of Ranguvar being a tough one, he tells Fleabitt that they'll have to pay her special attention, conveying that he plans on subjecting her to the most torment by using his whip to try to break her, which he tries to do to her at first to no avail.
- After breaking two whips on Ranguvar and getting his ear torn off by her, he tried to get permission from Vilu to kill her by means of tying rocks to her neck and paws and sliding her into the water to drown to death while having the other oarslaves watch, only for Vilu to deny this, telling him that she's not ready for death yet and to instead cut her food and water for a few days, which Bullflay was initially about to protest against before carrying it out after being intimidated by his stare. Unbeknownst to him, though, she would be given food by the other oarslaves.
- After thefts on the ship have been occurring, unbeknownst to everyone by Vurg and Beau, on Vilu's orders, Bullflay tortures more than a score of vermin who had been caught in possession of stolen property despite Vilu knowing they didn't steal the items by hoisting them up by their tails and giving them twenty lashes apiece, sluicing them with salt water, and letting them hang until sunset before cutting them down, showing Bullflay isn't afraid to turn the whip on his own crewmates at all.
- Despite Redwall's heinous standard, Bullflay stands out for the slavery he subjects many creatures Vilu captures for him to being one of the (if not the) worst types in the franchise, consisting of them being whipped and starved heavily to emaciation, and while he is doing his job, he takes a lot of sadism in it, even continuing to torment the slaves in his own spare time.
