Brainiac (originally called Vril Dox) is the main antagonist of the 2017 video game Injustice 2. He's the arch-nemesis of Supergirl.
He is a ruthless and megalomaniacal alien super-computer Coluan from the planet Colu, intent on conquering the entire universe, completing his collection of Krypton by destroying Superman and Supergirl, and enslaving and studying nearly all life forms he encounters. Despite him being the ultimate villain of the entire game itself, Brainiac is also a playable character in the game until the playable Brainiac is revealed to be Brainiac 5 of the future Legion of Super-Heroes.
He was voiced by Jeffrey Combs.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- He wiped out and enslaved trillions of lifeforms while collecting cities and lifeforms before destroying their planets—one of these unfortunate fallen worlds was Krypton, the home planet of Superman and Supergirl. He also killed Supergirl's mother in the opening of Injustice 2.
- According to some of his intros with different characters, Brainiac has already collected billions of worlds. Atrocitus also states that Brainiac has slaughtered trillions.
- He was the secret mastermind behind The Society, with its members (led by Gorilla Grodd) unknowingly helping Brainiac collect Earth.
- Although never actually stated by Brainiac, he probably only saw use in Grodd to achieve his goals and likely would have disposed him whenever he saw him as no longer useful, just like how Grodd admitted his true intentions of doing the same thing once he was done with Brainiac.
- Unlike certain other versions of Brainiac (such as DCAU Brainiac), Injustice Brainiac is not a robot, he's a highly intelligent cyborg, meaning he isn't following some kind of programming, nor is he a rogue robot that rewrote its programming, he's willingly choosing to do his actions, giving him no moral agency issues.
- Even if he was a robot, he'd be far too advanced and intelligent to have moral agency issues.
- Like many other versions of Brainiac, he is cold, nearly emotionless, and sees life as just data for him to collect and study.
Comics[]
- When arrived on earth, he formed an alliance with Grodd, and although it's implied to be pragmatic, he assisted Grodd to return to power as a part of his plan to collect the cities and all lifeforms on earth. This means Brainiac is both indirectly and partially responsible for the death of Solovar and later Ra's al Ghul after Grodd usurped Gorilla City.
- He admits to Superboy that he had planned to invade and take Oa (home of the Guardians of the Universe) when the planet was under attack by Red Lanterns. He then states that the reason he didn't was because the Guardians and the Green Lanterns defeated the Red Lanterns.
- In the non-canon fight clashes between Hal Jordan and John Stewart in Injustice 2, Brainiac states he's willing to go after Oa again after he destroys Earth, saying "First Earth, then Oa.".
- He expelled Superboy from the Skull Ship for not being a pure Kryptonian after analyzing him.
Injustice 2[]
- After sending them up into his ship and introducing himself, he attacks Green Arrow and Black Canary. He then begins to choke Canary when she tried to defend herself.
- He begins an invasion into several cities on Earth, including Metropolis, Gotham, Beijing, and Moscow.
- Later in story mode, it is revealed Brainiac also invaded and took Coast City (Hal Jordan's home city) and Detroit (In Cyborg's arcade ending).
- He hacks into and temporally takes over Brother Eye.
- He begins an invasion into Atlantis. Aquaman later confirms that Atlantis had fallen.
- After earth's defenses were compromised, he sends out several more ships to go after more major cities.
- Through one of the screens of Brother Eye, he blasts Cyborg and creates Grid, an emotionless android clone of Cyborg that would fight either Cyborg himself or Catwoman.
- After Batman, Catwoman, Superman, and Supergirl fails to stop him, he takes Metropolis and adds it to his collection.
- After Superman gains back consciousness after Metropolis fell and attempts to stop the skull ship again, Brainiac nearly kills him.
- He offers to not destroy earth if Supergirl is handed over to him, however, as Batman stated, Brainiac was almost certainly lying.
- After finding Kahndaq, he begins an invasion to take it, obtain the Rock of Eternity, and study magic.
- Luckily, unlike with Atlantis and Metropolis, the invasion failed, as the real plan was for the heroes to destroy the shields of Brainiac's ship with Kahndaq's magic.
- When Batman and Supergirl are inside his ship, Brainiac ambushes them. He then sends Supergirl away to be vivisected. Luckily, she later manages to escape.
- Because he had concluded that Batman was not worth collecting, he ordered his robots to kill him. If not for Superman, who showed up alive and saved him, Batman might have died.
- He brainwashes Firestorm and Swamp Thing, causing them to attack and fight Superman and Batman.
- Because neither Firestorm nor Swamp Thing would have willingly gone with Brainiac, this would suggest Brainiac had abducted them or had Grodd make members of the Society (before it disbanded) do it while the two were offscreen sometime during story mode.
- He kills Kent Nelson (Doctor Fate) before engaging in combat with Superman & Batman.
- When about to fight Superman, he openly admits to having killed billions of Kryptonians.
- When Superman and Batman attempt to release earth's stolen cities, Brainiac angrily attacks Batman (one of the few times Brainiac actually shows emotions), angrily demands Superman give back his ship, and when Supergirl (who was weakened by kryptonite exposure) uses heat vision on him to prevent him from potentially harming Superman, he begins to attempt to harm her until Batman intervened.
- He permanently deleted Coast City and Metropolis before Earth's other cities were restored. This may cause Superman to try to kill Brainiac after he’s defeated.
- In the Absolute Power ending (Superman's story mode ending) Superman kills Brainiac (offscreen), however, his death is not played for sympathy, if anything, despite how evil Injustice Superman became, Brainiac is an example of many villains that was beyond redemption, making Superman's action of killing him somewhat justified.
- Despite Batman trying to stop Superman from killing Brainiac, it doesn't make him a scapegoat because he still deserves death for everything he did. Even Batman admits to Superman that even if he agreed that Brainiac should die, they shouldn't kill him due to needing him alive to save the remaining cities.
- In Brainiac's arcade ending, Brainiac 5 revealed because of Brainiac's actions, people in the future are afraid of Coluans, meaning despite centuries after his demise, he has had a long-lasting impact and caused his entire species to be feared.
Trivia[]
- He is one of four Pure Evil Injustice villains, alongside Doomsday, Scarecrow and Joker from animated movie adaptation.
- In a non-canon fight interaction between the two, Brainiac expressed disgust in how the Joker corrupted Superman by making him kill his unborn son and wife to activate a bomb that destroys the city he swore to protect, like most of the characters (villains included) in the franchise. If it was canon, this could suggest that he has standards. However, the context of the moment seemed to indicate that Brainiac simply despised the Joker for insanity as opposed to the heinous nature of his crimes, so even if this interaction was canon, its unlikely it would be a legitimate prevention.
- He is the third version of Brainiac to be Pure Evil, along with his comics counterpart and his animated counterpart.
