Blodge is a minor antagonist in the book Mariel of Redwall, the fourth book within the Redwall novel series. He is the sadistic slavedriver of the ship Seatalon under Captain Catseyes, who takes delight in the torment he inflicts upon the oarslaves on the ship and does whatever he can to make their lives as miserable as possible for his own enjoyment.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • As the slavedriver of the Seatalon, he has been subjecting the ship's oarslaves, of which there are many, to slavery for seasons on end, said slavery consisting of him overworking them by constantly forcing them to row the heavy oars of the ship while being whipped endlessly to the point of where hides would be torn off some of their backs and starved and killing whoever is unable to row anymore. He derives a lot of sadistic enjoyment from his job, even for a searat, going so far as to make a song out of the oarslaves' suffering and being conveyed to be dedicated to making their lives on the ship as miserable as possible, making him the most sadistic corsair on the ship as well.
  • When Dandin tells Catseyes that he is not fit to wear the sword of Martin the Warrior that he stole, per Catseyes' nod towards him, Blodge flails his whip hard against his back, though the young mouse continues to glare his hatred at the captain.
  • He even acts cruelly towards the slaves while not whipping them, as during feeding time, after he and his assistant Clatt carry two buckets, one full of boiled barley meal and the other full of water, they purposely waste them by slopping the water and meal carelessly at some bowls so that they'd miss and splash upon the deck to torment them with mockery as Blodge sarcastically tells them to hold the bowls out straight while Clatt tells them that they're too kind to them, treating them like a pair of nursemaids.
  • While conversing with Clatt, when the latter declares that he'll grab some roasted seabird and sweet wine and some of the sugary dried fruits King Gabool keeps, Blodge tells him that he'll have no such luck since he's staying aboard with him and the others per the captain's orders, threatening to kill him if he does not do as he is told.
  • After they decide to go to the forecastle head cabin to make some skilly and duff, they harass a nearby slave who is a very young shrew by asking if they like skilly and duff and then telling them they won't be getting any.
  • Upon coming across Joseph the Bellmaker with 20 allies at his side and all the slaves they had freed after they killed Captain Catseyes, Blodge unwound his whip and raised it, ordering them to get back under the threat of tearing their hides off with it only for Dandin to chop it in half with his sword before finishing Blodge off with his sword while Clatt gets killed by the twenty mice with their chains.
  • Despite Redwall's massive heinous standard, Blodge stands out for his low resources, low screentime, and the amount of enjoyment he derives from the cruelty he subjects the oarslaves he is in charge of to, with slavery also being among the worst types within the franchise.

Trivia[]

  • Blodge is the only PE in the Redwall franchise who isn't a major antagonist.
