Black Wolf is the main antagonist of the 2008 Finnish computer-animated film The Flight Before Christmas (originally released as Niko & The Way to the Stars) and the overarching antagonist of its sequel Little Brother, Big Trouble: A Christmas Adventure. He is the leader of a pack of wolves who hunt reindeer and plots to eat Santa Claus and his reindeer, the Flying Forces, to take their place and bring death to all the children of the world.
He was voiced by Vesa Vierikko in the Finnish version, Alan Stanford in the UK English version, Sam Gold in the US English version, and Ingo Albrecht in the German-language version.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He sends two minions to look for reindeer and berates them when they fail.
- Essie telling him that the Flying Forces are good and that the Wolf Pack would get more to eat if they tried being nicer and working for Santa gives him the idea to take Santa's place and eat all the children in the world. When told that such a thing would upset Santa, Black Wolf reveals that he plans to eat Santa as well.
- Notably, he never makes any mention of wanting to eat the parents; he seems interested only in eating the children. The way the line is delivered makes it sound as if children are a rare delicacy to him, which only adds to his vileness.
- His response to discovering that Niko and Julius overheard him talking about his plan is to try to kill them so that they cannot pass along the information. He also bails on his pack when they are covered by an avalanche caused by Wilma.
- Upon encountering a potentially dangerous cave, he forces Ellie to go first, figuring that he and his pack will know what not to do if anything should happen to her. Specs has grown attached to Ellie and decides to go first in her place, to which Black Wolf sarcastically responds that he's going to miss him.
- After disguising himself as Santa, he chases Niko up a tree and jumps on Santa's sleigh to eat him.
- Julius saves Niko by unlatching both himself and Black Wolf, but Black Wolf still tries to eat Julius.
- Although he has no actual kills to his name, Black Wolf has an attempted body count of children, pushing him past the baseline for a villain from a kids' film.
- The only reason why he spared Ellie was because he considered her a good luck charm after she (unintentionally) gave his awful idea to him. His mercy is further nullified when he tries to send her into a cave that could kill her.
- The sequel reveals that he had a sister who wants to avenge his death. That makes it clear that she cares about him, but whether the feeling is mutual is never made clear, especially as he never so much as mentions her in the first film.
Trivia[]
- As it is also the name of his appearance, it is unlikely that Black Wolf is his real name.
