What dost thou want?
~ Black Philip asking Thomasin (and first lines).
Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?
~ Black Phillip seducing Thomasin; his most famous quote.
I will guide thy hand.
~ Black Phillip to Thomasin when she states she cannot write her name.

Black Phillip is the main antagonist of the 2015 independent horror film The Witch, only revealing himself near the end. The other antagonist is The Witch, one of his servants. Taking on the guise of a billy goat, Black Phillip is actually the assumed mortal form of Satan himself, who torments a Puritan Christian family.

He was portrayed by a goat named Charlie and voiced by Wahab Chaudhry, who also portrayed his human form.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • It is heavily implied that Black Phillip is Satan himself, and he conjures up witches and makes them sell their souls to him.
  • He gave a witch orders to kidnap and murder a newborn.
  • Black Phillip had the witch possibly rape Caleb and cast a spell that killed him.
  • He corrupted the twins, causing them to forget their prayers and convulse. This drove William to decide to lock his children up with the goats, and he also has a witch kidnap the twins.
  • He commanded the witch to kill the livestock before personally murdering William.
  • He drove Katherine insane, and she even attempted to murder her daughter, forcing Thomasin to kill her in self-defense.
  • He makes a deal with Thomasin, and she sells her soul to him.
  • He has proven he has moral agency: He speaks to Thomasin at the end of the film, and he had various gestures and mannerisms when he was a goat, such as standing on his two hindlegs to taunt William before killing him.
