Black Doom is a major antagonist in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, serving as the main antagonist of Shadow the Hedgehog and the upcoming Shadow Generations campaign of Sonic X Shadow Generations.
He is the sinister leader of the Black Arms and the eldest of his species, who seeks to enslave humanity and use them as food for him and his army. He is one of the two arch-nemeses (alongside Mephiles the Dark), biological father and one of the two creators of Shadow the Hedgehog.
He was voiced by Ryūzaburō Ōtomo in the Japanese version, and by Sean Schemmel in the English version. The latter also voices Makuta Teridax in Bionicle: The Game, Conrad in Berserk, and Goku Black in Dragon Ball Super, Grings Kodai and Cyrus in the Pokémon franchise, and Skonk in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He manipulates Gerald Robotnik into creating an agent to bring him the Chaos Emeralds later on. This eventually would lead to GUN’s raid on the Space Colony Ark, causing the death of Maria Robotnik and Gerald going insane.
- He has his race ravage six cities in search of the Chaos Emeralds, causing millions of casualties.
- He manipulates Shadow into giving up his promise to Maria by making him relive the day of her death.
- In one of the possible storylines, he uses the ARK to obliterate Central City in an attempt to kill the President. While it's mentioned that the city was fully evacuated before the Eclipse Cannon fired at it, he likely didn't know this. He wouldn't have cared regardless of whether or not many innocents were still around.
- He wants to use the Earth's population as an "energy source" for his species, with "energy source" most likely meaning "food".
- While it could be argued that he cares for his Black Arms by giving them food, he only does so for pragmatic reasons. This is shown by the fact that he sacrifices many of his soldiers, leading the Black Arms like a cult, and the newborn Black Arms would eventually grow into the same killing machines, but more powerful.
- Not only does it emphasize his hypocrisy, his reasoning for hating humanity is itself one of extensive delusion.
- He uses the Black Arms' gas to paralyze Sonic and the others, laughing at Shadow's futile efforts to save his friends and listening to their screams as juvenile Black Arms start eating them alive.
- He warps the Black Comet to the Earth's surface in order to paralyze all of its population and have them eaten by the Black Arms.
- He immediately attempts to kill Shadow once he outlives his usefulness.
- He states with his own words Shadow was never but a mere pawn to him, clarifying he thought Shadow was “different” from the others against him.
- Given his clear intuitive personality, especially as a highly cohesive entity, he clearly has moral agency to know right from wrong.
- While planet-scale murder is a common crime among Sonic the Hedgehog villains, Black Doom manages to stand out due to his attempt to destroy humanity being exceptionally cruel in nature, as well as personal cruelty towards Shadow.
Trivia[]
- It's unknown if his status will change in the upcoming game Sonic X Shadow Generations.
