Killing one in order to save many is part of survival. It's one of the tough decisions that a weaker person couldn't make. It's why it falls to people like us to lead them to safety. Do you understand? Well, I wish it was different, I do. But they are weak...and we are strong. That's why it's our responsibility to shepherd the flock...to keep them safe. It's their nature to follow...not to lead.
~ Carver to Clementine.
How's that eye? Just follow my voice...it'll get ya there. You got a thick f-ckin' skull, Kenneth. Should've put you outta your misery right then...now look at ya. You're a mess. [turns to Rebecca] The f-ck are you looking at, bitch? Don't act like you didn't love every second of it-
~ Carver taunts Kenny and Rebecca, also his last words.

William "Bill" Carver, also more commonly known as simply Carver, is the main antagonist of the second season of Telltale Games' The Walking Dead video game series.

He is the intelligent and ruthless leader of a large community who is greatly feared by the cabin survivors, all of whom were once a part of his group before leaving to escape him.

He was voiced by Michael Madsen.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He leads his community with an iron fist and doesn't seem to truly care for them.
    • For example, he tells Troy that he'll be forced to walk back to camp if he wastes fuel to keep the heater going in their truck.
  • One of his ways to recruit people is by sending scouts around to look for survivors. While he neither makes an appearance nor is mentioned, his scout Tavia appears in the 400 Days DLC, where she convinces Vince, Wyatt, Russell, Shel, Becca, and Bonnie to join her group with promises such as shelter and food and succeeds in only recruiting Bonnie some or all of them.
    • Although it is stated by Bonnie that Carver was a nice leader once, all of these qualities are debased—if those were actually genuine and not a façade of course—and he only induces fear amongst his people, as shown several times.
      • In an optional scene, when Wyatt sees Clementine going to Carver's office, he shows fear of Carver by warning her not to keep him waiting. Another optional scene is when Vince sees Tavia smoking; he threatens her with telling Bill, which Tavia anxiously denies.
  • Although there is no clear evidence, it is assumed by Nick that he instigated a mass shooting of survivors (including Roman and Victor) on a riverbank near the group's cabin. During Clementine's conversation with Carver, if Clementine mentions the dead group down by the stream to Carver, he will correct her, implying that he may have been involved with their deaths.
    • If this is true, it would make him indirectly responsible for Pete's death as he gets bit by a walker while searching the corpses. It is also possible that the walker who bit Pete was one of the victims of the mass shooting.
  • Tortures Carlos in front of his daughter Sarah, breaking his fingers while also threatening to slit his throat.
    • He'll even beat his face to a bloody pulp if Clem goes outside looking for Kenny.
  • Executes Walter with a headshot in retaliation for Kenny sniping Johnny. It's also very likely that Carver only really cares about Johnny's death because he just lost a valuable soldier rather than a true friend since he doesn't even mention Johnny once later nor tries to honor him, just leaving his corpse there.
  • Regardless, he is responsible for Alvin's death:
    • If Kenny shoots Carver in Moonstar Lodge in which he misses his head but shoots him in the shoulder, he will retaliate Kenny's shot by shooting Alvin in the head as he gets up off the floor.
    • If Alvin survives in Moonstar Lodge, Carver will torture him to a bloody pulp in Howe's Hardware, resulting in him being too hurt to run and thus sacrificing himself to buy Clementine time to escape later on anyway, getting shot by one of Carver's henchmen, Hank.
  • If Clem surrenders early, Carver forces Kenny's surrender too by holding her at gunpoint, although she's just an 11-year-old.
    • On the other hand, if Clem goes outside looking for Kenny and lets him shoot Carver (which will result in Alvin's death), he will force them to surrender anyway by holding Sarita at gunpoint.
  • Abducts the cabin group to Howe's Hardware and forces them to work in the camp. It is also shown that he forces some other individuals, such as Reggie, Jane, and Mike.
  • Smacks Clementine if she stares at him during her transportation to the camp.
  • Forces Carlos to hit Sarah (who is not only just 15 years old but also very mentally ill) to punish the latter for talking out of turn. When Carlos tries to comfort his daughter afterwards, Carver stops him from doing so and instead tells him to just let her sit there and think about what she did.
  • Throws Reggie off the roof to his death for failing to pick enough berries, stating that he is 'weak of will and character'.
  • Attempts to corrupt Clem into becoming a social Darwinistic survivor like himself.
    • While he could not succeed in general, some of the optional actions of Clementine afterwards are questionable whether Carver does have an impact on her or not.
  • Beats up Luke for trying to steal food, which still hurts his ribs afterwards.
  • Smashes in Kenny's left eyeball with a walkie-talkie, rendering him half-blind with the likely brain damage attributing to his breakdown afterwards. He even mocks Kenny about this in his final moments before death without feeling any regret.
    • Though not confirmed, it is possible that Kenny sustained brain damage after the beating. This would make Carver indirectly responsible for Kenny’s unstable behavior.
  • Denies the group dinner as a punishment after beating Kenny, starving them.
  • Holds Rebecca and the group hostage before Clem intervenes, directly saying he'll kill her unborn baby. As there is a possibility that the baby belongs to him, he arguably attempts to kill his own child, which makes the situation worse.
    • Although Carver seems to care about Rebecca and her unborn baby as he constantly claims that he wants to provide a safe shelter for them, all of the claims are shed, and it was seen that he is not protective but heavily obsessed.
  • His last words before Kenny kills him all but confirm that he raped Rebecca, thus resulting in Alvin Junior being conceived.
    • His involvement in Alvin Jr.'s birth, from abusing the young AJ's birth parents to his attempt to corrupt Clementine, who later became AJ's de facto mother, marks him as the posthumous bigger bad of the second half of the series.
  • He is responsible for all incidents that happened even after his death, as he is the one who brought them upon the group with his previous actions. These incidents include the deaths of Troy, Carlos, Sarita, Sarah, Rebecca, Luke, and Kenny/Jane (or both).

Trivia[]

  • Some believe that executing Walter in retribution for Johnny's death is a redeeming quality. However, it's highly likely that Carver was only angry at losing a valuable soldier rather than actually caring for Johnny as a human being, especially since he's shown mistreating and even killing other subordinates (e.g., Troy and Reggie) over petty slights and never even mentions Johnny in Episode 3. Furthermore, Kenny was picking off Carver's group as this was happening, so it's really more of an intimidation tactic to force him into surrendering than anything else.
    • He also seems to have somewhat of a grudge against Alvin for killing his friend George, recalling this act at the end of episode 2. However, this was likely just taunting Alvin before killing him rather than genuine care, and he even belittles George's memory by using his name when he first meets Clementine.
  • In an interview, his voice actor Michael Madsen states that Carver may be a tragic extremist, but he still has a little bit of humanity at least. However, since none of these points are proven in-universe (plus, it's just Madsen's personal opinion rather than Word of God), he still lacks any redeeming qualities.
