Beverly "Bev" Keane is one the main antagonists in the 2021 Netflix horror series, Midnight Mass. She is a local member of St. Patrick's church, Father Paul Hill/Monsignor John Pruitt's former right-hand, and the one responsible (other than the former) for Crockett Island's destruction.

She is portrayed by Samantha Sloyan.

What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]

  • She is a textbook zealot who poses herself as a "saint" to everyone around her, but in actuality, has a superiority complexity where she looks down on others, disliking the idea of God loving others more than herself, which Annie Flynn rightfully points out and as pointed out by Joe Collie, the town's alcoholic resident, she was never a good person even when she was younger.
    • Additionally, she's a hypocrite at heart. She treats Sheriff Hassan Shabbaz with disdain and hostility, even remarked racist slurs against him and treating the death of Joe's dog (which she poisoned) like it was yesterday despite being a devoted follower of the Church, which she had the gall of reciting scriptures from the Bible just to justify her every act of heinousness.
  • She poisoned Joe Collie's dog, Pike, during the potluck out of petty spite simply because it barked at her, calling the dog a "menace".
  • After she discovered Father Paul was a vampire and his true identity, she had Wade Scarborough and Sturge help her cover the body of Joe Collie, acting apathetically to his death and trying to use scriptures to justify what happened to get Sturge to cooperate.
  • She had a more direct involvement with Father Paul's plan to rejuvenate the churchgoers into becoming vampires, believing the "Second Coming" would happen, and had the idea of kickstarting the titular Midnight Mass. To do so, she was the one who handed out poisoned wine to the congregation and turned several of the churchgoers into vampires, one of them being Hassan's son, Ali, who she encouraged to be "an example" to others. She even hid away when the vampires started massacring other churchgoers, including children.
  • After becoming a vampire, she had the remaining vampires released onto Crockett Island, having the remaining populace who didn't attend church be massacred and turned into vampires as well against Father Paul's wishes (which he was rightfully disgusted after this), one of the victims was Riley's parents, which she feast upon Annie's blood and turned her into a vampire.
  • She reveals to have intentions of starting a potentially apocalyptic event where she'll guide the vampires by boat to the mainland where she'll repeat the same process back from the island, killing countless lives, potentially from thousands to millions, should it succeed. Luckily, the boats were later set on fire afterward.
  • When Howard Hobbs, a local non-Christian resident, turned into a vampire that killed his own wife and sons while later expressing grief, she acted indifferently cold-hearted about it and insists on having him burnt by sunrise.
  • Shot Sheriff Hassan for burning down the rec center prior to Ali doing the deed, this would make her responsible for his death afterward.
  • While everyone on the island whose now a vampire come to accept their fated deaths by the sunlight, Bev made a pathetic attempt to save her own skin by desperately digging a hole to hide herself, which failed.
  • While seemingly affable to anyone she came across such as the Scarborough Family and Mildred Gunning, as well as being on good terms with Sturge, she acts indifferently with little to no empathy with the former becoming vampires thanks to her poison, Mildred getting attacked by the Vampire, or Sturge killing himself in front of the congregation. Her reaction to Leeza Scarborough walking for the first time was out of the idea of a "miracle" than being happily joyed by it and considering she's not above poisoning most of the churchgoers say otherwise.
  • While a rather loyal follower of Father Paul Hill/Monsignor John Pruitt, it is remotely out of fanatism instead of genuine care in spite of taking care of him and showing concerns for his "death" prior to being revealed as a vampire. This is ultimately subverted when Father Paul was disgusted with her actions and denounces him in front of her followers, hoping he and Mildred will burn by sunrise.

Trivia[]

  • Bev Keane is one of the villains from Mike Flanagan's work to be Pure Evil, alongside The Man.
