Greygnarl's nefarious nemesis, He was defeated long ago, but the empire brought him back to wreak havoc once more. He and Greygnarl once formed a duality of darkness and light, but his memory of this beneficial balance has been obliterated.
~ Barbarus' information.
I command a power greater than you ever have known. And you will bow before it.
~ Barbarus

Barbarus is the true secondary antagonist in Dragon Quest IX.

He is the large black dragon of darkness and the counterpart to Greygnarl, the dragon of light. Both dragons are bound by a lethal rivalry. Originally an ally of the Gittish Empire before being ressurected by the game's true main antagonist Corvus the fallen, not Godwyn.

What makes him pure evil?[]

  • Despite being a dragon, he is told to have a moral agency as he understood that the Empire is evil (though it was due to King Godwyn taking over and destroying the Empire's reputation), but he willingly joined them for the fun of it.
  • Over 300 years ago, Barbarus allied himself with the Gittish Empire and massacred myriads of lives while being aware of just exactly who he was fighting for.
  • Every action the Gittish Empire is responsible for committing also falls under his shoulders.
  • While Styrmling may be predicted to be Sterling's true form and also told to be another one of Barbarus' brother along with Greygnarl, he doesn't seem to care for them at all.
  • Though he joined King Godwyn's Empire, nothing he does showcases genuine loyalty to them other than following their orders as in the latter he joins Corvus but that's later.
  • Though he didn't torture the Celestrian people like King Godwyn did, it was told that the reason he has so much power is because he drained the Celestrians' energy.
  • After being revived by Lieutenant Hootingham Gore with his force completely restored to take on Greygnarl, should he ever show up to stop the Gittish Empire's plans once again. He probably killed a lot of people in King Godwyn's plans for World Domination.
  • Attacked Starlight Express as a way to show "how fired up" he is when the heroes had allied with Stella the fariy and plummet down to Wormwood Creek but luckily both survived. Not only does he attack the heroes, he also attacked Styrmling who is actually told to be his and Greygnarl's brother while under the posthumous disguise of Captain Sterling of the Starlight Express.
  • When the hero reaches the town called Upover to seek the help of Greygnarl, Barbarus (knowing already that attacking the town is absolutely wrong) invades the area and taunts his brother to witness the destruction of his home before he murdered Greygnarl after he sacrificed himself to block the huge ball of darkness Barbarus had fired at Upover.
  • While our hero and Sterling tried to escape the Gortress, Barbarus attempts to murder both of them and the other prisoners that tried to escape from the Gittish Empire too. This resulted in one of the guards who got knocked down brutally murdered and who knows how many more people he killed in that scene.
  • Once Corvus had broken out of the Gittish Empire dungeons, he betrayed the Empire (though King Godwyn deserved to get betrayed during the part he dies in) but betrays the Empire in order to destroy the Realm of the Almighty into the Realm of the Mighty or otherwise called The Evil Palace of Desperation and Hatred.
  • Though Barbarus is a dragon, once again, he was not only aware he was revived, but also knew Corvus' plans and joins him to destroy all life in the world, knowing already incalculable number of lives are going to die thanks to him joining Corvus. He likely has destroyed hundreds more before the Heroes arrived at Corvus' new grotto lair.
  • Though he may have served Corvus, due to being pure evil he doesn't serve him out of genuine respect, so he still qualifies.
  • He interferes again with the heroes when they had gone to confront Corvus but is given a well-deserved defeat.
  • While King Godwyn may have an army of his own to achieve his goals and Yore was just a demon with less resources than Godwyn to massacre numerous with Brigadoom being one of them, Barbarus still manages stands out as he has no tragic backstory unlike his master, Corvus. What makes much worse, is that he has in past committed multiple attempted mass murders before the other three villains and is one of the only three antagonists in the game to have successfully invade a peaceful village and a slave stronghold full of prisoners.
  • While it can be considered morally ambiguous that he was born as a dark dragon and born from the darkness according to Greynarl, the audience forgot to remember that he wasn't made evil, and he was supposed to be there to balance the Light the Dark but chose not to because of his newly found obsession to destroy all life with Corvus. In addition, he had harmed both his brothers without consideration and even murdered one out of his own ego.

Trivia[]

He along with King Godwyn and Yore are the only pure evil antagonists to be from Dragon Quest IX so far.
