~ Judd describing Jewish people. |
B. Frederick Judd, also known as Commander Judd, is the overarching antagonist of The Handmaid's Tale novel duology.
He is the highest known ranking Commander in the nation of Gilead, a misogynistic theocratic regime which enslaves women to act as breeding slaves known as "Handmaids" for Commanders and their Wives. Judd was instrumental in the destruction of the United States government and the construction of Gilead.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He was instrumental in the foundation of Gilead, being the individual behind the "President's Day Massacre", during which numerous members of the United States government were murdered and the country was dismantled.
- He orchestrated the Gilead Homelands Genocide, in which millions of non-white and Jewish people were expelled from the country and placed on boats, then taken onto the Atlantic Ocean and dumped into the sea to drown.
- He helped create the majority of the laws and customs in Gilead, most notably when coming up with the idea for the "Handmaids", a social class of women in Gilead forced to act as breeding slaves for Commanders and their Wives. Judd decided that to control women they would have to use women, thus he came up with the social class of "Aunts" older women who act as abusive instructors and torture and break women until they submit to being Handmaids.
- He tortured older women by leaving them in a sensory deprivation tank until they break down and agree to becomes Aunts.
- He came up with the idea of "Particicutions", an event in which Handmaids beat convicted criminals to death to relieve pent up frustration. Often times the criminals executed are actually members of rebellions, and the Handmaids are lied to, being told the rebels have committed crimes such as rape in order to make sure they are as brutal as possible in their execution methods.
- He takes teenage girls as his wives and rapes them repeatedly. Once they become adults he poisons them so that he can keep having access to more underaged victims, something he attempts to do to both Agnes and Daisy.
- He says that he feels bad for an executed pedophile and tells Lydia to pray for their soul.
- While he appears to show some affability towards Lydia, he ultimately only cares about what she can do for him, and even takes credit for her ideas in order to boost his political career.
- His ultimate fate is unknown, meaning he is possibly a Karma Houdini.
