Mankind bound me, thinking they could escape subjugation. Willfully and selfishly, they have reduced the world to tatters! Now the sinners must atone.
~ Azazel's motive rant

Azazel is the overarching antagonist of the Tekken franchise. He is the creator of the Devil Gene, who bestowed it upon certain individuals that came to serve and worship him as their god. One of these individuals was Kazumi Mishima, who in turn would bestow the Devil Gene herself onto her son, Kazuya, leading to the ever-growing conflict within the Mishima bloodline.

He was voiced by Richard Epcar, who also voiced Myotismon in Digimon Adventure, Skull in Cyborg 009, and Yhwach in Bleach.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • After his awakening, he claimed that humans have wilfully and selfishly destroyed the world, seeking to annihilate them for their sins, but this only makes him a false prophet who wants to kill humans out of spite.
  • After being resealed into an orb by Zafina, Azazel attempted to fully possess the priestess and corrupt her to be just like him. It is also possible he is trying to escape from the orb to wreak havoc upon the world once more.
  • Despite being a demon, he has a clear moral agency for differentiating between right and wrong, yet he chooses to do wrong (although he sees himself as doing "good," like the egomaniac that he is) by attempting to cause mass destruction to the world. Furthermore, him being known as being 'made from evil' is way too vague to prove that he has moral agency problems.
  • Enslaved humanity in the past, which prompted the humans to seal him, and is willing to enslave them again in the present day after his awakening for their sins.
  • Caused a volcanic apocalypse in a Middle Eastern village.
  • Azazel is responsible for giving the Hachijo Clan the Devil Gene, turning them into devils.
  • He wanted to sway Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima to his side, as evidenced by his Scenario Campaign dialogue, but tried to kill them when they resisted.
  • Upon being revived by Kazuya, Azazel attempted to absorb his powers.
  • Unlike many other villains (including Kazuya and Heihachi), he has no redeeming qualities, and his actions make him stand out as one of the most evil and heinous villains in the entire franchise.

Trivia[]

  • Along with Bryan Fury and Lee Chaolan (1998 Film), Azazel is one of the three Tekken Pure Evils so far.
    • Interestingly, but unsurprisingly enough, Bryan is the only character in the Scenario Campaign who seems to be impressed with Azazel and what he has managed to do.
