Azar is a supporting antagonist of the 2020 action role-playing fantasy game Genshin Impact, who serves as the main antagonist of the Sumeru Archon Quest.
He was voiced by Kim Yong.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Although he was not responsible for detaining Lesser Lord Kusanali/Nahida for 500 years, he wholeheartedly supports her detainment and enjoys a good chunk of the crimes his predecessors committed, as proven that he also opposes Nilou celebrating the Sabzeruz Festival because of its connection to Lesser Lord Kusanali while continuing to support the Sages' belief that Kusanali is inferior to Rukkhadevata with the "never found the body" excuse, even though she actually died.
- In addition, he attempted to get rid of Alhaitham by having drive himself insane with forbidden knowledge after he outlived his usefulness, something his predecessors have also done before.
- Due to their opposition to Azar's plans, he imprisons Naphis, the Sage of the Amurta Darshan, and the unnamed Sage of the Vahumana Darshan.
- He trapped the people of Sumeru in a dream and forced Nilou to continuously relive the moment where he forces the cancellation of the Sabzeruz Festival along with others to repeat moments. This act almost results in the death of Dunyarzad and potentially thousands more.
- He extracted the dreams of all the people in Sumeru City 168 times so that he could utilize the extracted knowledge to help Dottore ascend Scaramouche who would become their God of Wisdom (thus, almost murdering them in the process). The effects of this were shown on-screen as Dehya's employer Dunyarzad Homayani was no longer able to sustain the dream harvesting and thus left the dream along with the Traveler's mental fatigue, leading to Azar nearly murdering everybody through his project.
- He made false rumors of King Deshret's revival to manipulate the radical Eremite factions into becoming a scapegoat to help them with his plan to extract forbidden knowledge from the mad scholars in Aaru Village to give to Scaramouche which is connected to Irminsul.
- His plan to utilize divine knowledge in his God Creation Plan would be seriously catastrophic towards Irminsul, as it was also formed with forbidden knowledge which is poisonous to it.
- Not to mention that the Interlude Chapter further establishes that Scaramouche wasn't even able to move the slightest bit while being connected to Irminsul through the Shouki no Kami mech, making him unable to escape Azar and Il Dottore's experimentations until his defeat.
- When Setaria starts having a change of heart thanks to the Traveler and Nahida, he immediately has her arrested before she can do anything.
- It is further established that despite treating Cyno as a respected leader of the Matra, he continuously expects him to serve the Sages without question while refusing to let him investigate his master project, constantly using the Akasha to record his activity logs so to force him to do what they want while hypocritically not practicing what they preach.
- Upon being confronted by the Traveler and Alhaitham in the House of Daena for continuing to rely on a god despite his desire to rely on human wisdom, he hypocritically slanders Kusanali while continuing to blame her for a lack of academic progress in the Akademiya.
- While he had Alhaitham shoot down Siraj's hive mind thesis out of genuine safety and practical concerns, violating the six sins of the Akademiya, he has subverted it by the events of Chapter III, by committing the following sins:
- Interfering with human evolution: Utilizing the Akasha to override peoples' thought processes completely by making it do the thinking for them and regulating their dreams and minds.
- Tampering with life and death: Willingly collaborating with Il Dottore's experiment to ascend Scaramouche into a deity by connecting him to Irminsul, while extracting peoples' dreams in doing so.
- Revering gods without acts of devotion: Only worshipping Greater Lord Rukkhadevata for her wisdom rather than her positive traits.
- When his plans were completely foiled thanks to Alhaitham trying to give him a false sense of security while leading him away from the guards, he cowardly begs to Cyno with the excuse that his high rank in the hierarchy allows him to be above the law, only to be threatened with "judgment in the name of a god," leading to Kusanali's release.
- It was highly implied that his off-screen remorse was only due to his memory of Greater Lord Rukkhadevata being erased from existence, making it less of a truly redeeming moment as he didn't redeem by his own volition. In addition, there wasn't any hint of repentance for his crimes as he and his fellow Sages were merely only surprised at the sight of the Traveler and Kusanali saving Irminsul, not at how their crimes turned out to be in vain.
- And while it was stated that their motive on creating a new god was to save Irminsul, it was used to cover up their true motive, which is to create a new God of Wisdom for themselves, helped by Tighnari even questioning such a motive to begin with, and not to mention that their only mention of Irminsul is when they proclaim that Shouki no Kami could restore Irminsul with his might.
- Despite merely being a tool for Il Dottore to help Scaramouche ascend to a god, his endangering the entirety of Sumeru City through dream harvesting and psychologically abusing Nilou are enough to push him past both of them in terms of heinousness. He even planned to betray Dottore himself after ascending Scaramouche as he had set up a plan to where he would take control of Scaramouche using backup memories.
- As revealed in Inversion of Genesis, he makes a backup of Scaramouche's memories in the Akasha just in case he ascends to godhood so that he could betray the Fatui and take control of every move from his immobile body.
