| ~ Atsushi's modus operandi in a nutshell |
Atsushi Kanamoto (in Japanese: 金本 敦, Kanamoto Atsushi), better known by his online handle Johnny Black (in Japanese: ジョニー・ブラック, Jonī Burakku), is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Shouichi Shinkawa) of the Sword Art Online franchise.
He is one of the secondary antagonists for the Phantom Bullet Arc and the minor antagonist of Alicization Arc. He is one of the ten thousand players who were trapped in Sword Art Online and a member of the infamous guild, Laughing Coffin as well as one of the collective identities of Death Gun.
In Japanese, he was voiced by Ryota Osaka. In English, he was voiced by Alejandro Saab.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Committed player-killing in Sword Art Online after PoH convinced him all the murders would be blamed on Akihiko Kayaba.
- Attempted to kill Kains, Schmitt, and Yolko under the orders of Grimlock.
- Invented and supplied poisons to the Laughing Coffin members, most likely contributing to Vassago's already high bodycount.
- Suggested making the Golden Apple guild members fight to their deaths, when PoH points out that he's done it before and he killed the survivors, he complains to him about how the element of surprise is ruined.
- Participated in the Death Gun plot with Shouichi Shinkawa so he could murder people again.
- Nearly killed Kirito and Asuna after being foiled by the former, poisoning the former and resulting in him having to be healed by the Soul Translator, thus being directly responsible for Alicization Arc.
- Though he doesn't have much screen time, when he is on screen, all he does is show the audience what he truly is: a sadistic, deranged, cruel murderer who commits his crimes with such glee and without remorse.
- Atsushi is also surprisingly vindictive, by even recognizing Kirito's real life look similar to his Aincrad's in-game avatar, while Atsushi, as Johnny Black, is concealed within a mask. This leads to an open window of opportunity for Atsushi poisoning Kirito and the kickstarter of Alicization Arc events.
- Despite the high heinous standards of Sword Art Online, Atsushi manages to stand out due to having minimal resources and having managed to do far more damage than what his resources would normally allow him to do due to contributing to the Laughing Coffin's already-high bodycount, as well as a lot of personal villainy towards Kirito and Asuna.
Trivia[]
- Atsushi, along with Shouichi and Vassago Casals, are the only Pure Evils from the Laughing Coffin.
- In the gameverse continuity of Sword Art Online, there is no mention of Atsushi Kanamoto nor Johnny Black in Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet. With Death Gun being solely operated by the Shinkawa brothers.
