“ | What have I done wrong? Even the heroic Sparda sacrificed a woman so that he could become a legend! I wished to be a god! And I sacrificed one miserable human being for that reason. That is all! Was that really so awful? | „ |
~ Arkham denying the severity of his crimes to his daughter. |
Arkham is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Vergil) of the 2005 action-adventure video game Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening.
He is a human who became a demon after sacrificing his wife and later had a desire to obtain the power of the legendary Dark Knight, Sparda. He is the disowned father and arch-nemesis of his daughter, Lady.
He is voiced by Adam D. Clark.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He sacrificed his own wife in a ritual to gain demonic power, an event that left his daughter Mary traumatized and left her with a hatred of all demon kind.
- He told Vergil about the seals in the tower of Temen-ni-gru and together they worked to undo the seals and open the portal to the demon world, not caring about people who would die if the demons got out into the city.
- He threw Lady off the Tower which would resulted in her death if Dante hadn't saved her.
- He pretends to be dying from Vergil's stab wound and tells his daughter that Vergil was controlling him the entire time and that he regrets his actions to further emotionally manipulate her into arriving at the top of the tower for his plan.
- After Dante and Vergil's second fight he take advantage of their beat-up state to beat them up and then he stabs his own daughter in the leg to get her blood to break the seal on the portal to the demon world.
- He claims the Power of Sparda which he planned to use to bring ruin to the world and rule over it as a god.
- He attempts to use his power to kill Dante and Vergil who attempt to stop him.
- In his last moments, he begs his daughter for help claiming he did nothing wrong and asked if sacrificing one miserable human for the power of a god was so awful.
- While he does have some funny moments as Jester none of them detract from how heinous he is, especially after it is revealed they are one and the same.
- Arkham himself greatly dislikes his Jester disguise, stating he had to ''dress like a complete idiot'' to make sure Dante never figured out who he was.
Trivia[]
- Arkham and Sanctus are the only two Devil May Cry Pure Evils.
- Arkham in the 2025 Netflix series is not Pure Evil due to the series not being canon to the games and does not have enough characterization to be classified as such.
