“ | Always the same... And now all this. No more stones. No more spears. No more slings. No more swords. No more weapons! No more systems! NO MORE! No more superpowers... So much faith in their tools, in their machines. You can fire your arrows from the Tower of Babel... but you can never... strike.... GOD!!! | „ |

~ Apocalypse to Storm. |
En Sabah Nur, otherwise known as Apocalypse, is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Sebastian Shaw) of the X-Men film series, serving as the overarching antagonist of the 2014 superhero film X-Men: Days of Future Past and the titular main antagonist of the 2016 superhero film X-Men: Apocalypse.
He is the world's first and most powerful mutant, who was born prior to 3,600 B.C. in Ancient Egypt, where he was worshipped as a god. He possessed various mutant abilities that made him seemingly invincible. Apocalypse would always select four powerful mutants to serve him as his Four Horsemen.
Upon awakening in the modern world in 1983, Apocalypse lived under the belief that mankind needed to be eradicated. Apocalypse recruited Storm, Psylocke, Archangel and Magneto to serve as his Horsemen. His plot was ultimately foiled during the Battle in Cairo and he was killed by Jean.
He was portrayed by Oscar Isaac.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Ruled over Egypt like a tyrannical god for centuries, if not millennia, oppressing innumerable people.
- Set civilizations ablaze when they did not evolve to his liking, metaphorically citing that "the forest" would grow rank and "require" new growth. He is remorseless to the point of citing he was there when he was "needed" to do what he does best by causing wanton destruction.
- While his genocidal actions prior to the Common Era are never once shown onscreen, the city he "cleanses" later to rebuild his pyramid with its remains and him attempting to conquer Earth both being shown onscreen, are enough to not make it a case of off-screen villainy.
- He cares nothing for his horsemen, calling Archangel "useless". His brutality alienates Magneto and his callousness alienates Storm, and while Psylocke is unconscious for this, it's certainly possible that she would've hated him for his selfishness too. When he realizes this, he plans to kill them along with everyone else and not exactly with a heavy heart.
- "Recruited" new Horsemen by exploiting troubled mutants, being:
- Storm, who lived in great poverty and squalor and had just nearly been amputated.
- Psylocke, who was bored working for the creepy and unaccommodating Caliban.
- Archangel, who had just become too injured to resume his own profession, ring fighting.
- Last, but anything but least, Magneto, who had just lost his wife and daughter as well as his job.
- While he only broke Caliban's pistol in self-defense, it is not a redeeming quality.
- Painfully killed anyone in his path, especially at the booth where Storm was confronted for stealing, and at the factory where Magneto worked. While the law enforcers he slew were going to slice off Storm's hand, it was a common punishment for the country and time period, and they didn't deserve to die for doing their jobs.
- Infiltrates Cerebro, the most powerful focal point of mutation and cutting-edge technology in the world, and causes Professor X immense pain. While he did humanity a favor by disposing of their nukes, it was just pragmatism and an attempt to reassure himself that nothing the humans possessed could thwart his evil intentions.
- Breaks into the X-Mansion and kidnaps Professor X. He forces him to perversely threaten seven billion people at once, and he plans to possess Xavier and use his telepathic powers to enter the minds of anyone he chooses.
- Destroys an entire city and reshapes it as a pyramid.
- Urged Magneto to use his powers to move the magnetic poles of the Earth, killing approximately 150 million people.
- Breaks Quicksilver's leg and arm and put him to have his throat slashed by Psylocke. When she is revealed as Mystique, he strangles her brutally and threatens to murder her to draw out Professor X, who is her foster brother, to draw him out of hiding when his plan to possess him fails.
- His death by the Phoenix's hand is played for complete satisfaction.
- He is driven solely by the allure of hegemonic power and wanton destruction and sees these two twisted forms of gratification as being an end in and of itself, and he has nothing redeeming about himself whatsoever.
Trivia[]
- This is one of the four versions of Apocalypse to be Pure Evil, alongside his animated counterpart, alternate comic book version and video game counterpart.
- Some viewers do not believe Apocalypse is Pure Evil, as the humans worshiped him prior to his "betrayal" and they think that if they saw his potential they would probably worship him again. This is not the case, however, as his people were terrified of him because of his extreme tyranny and there is absolutely no indication the majority considered his entombment a bad thing.
- Ironically, despite being Pure Evil, Apocalypse's plans involved making mutantkind the superior race in the world, which would have eventually benefitted the mutants, because as shown in Logan, all mutants were hunted down until near extinction by Donald Pierce and Dr. Zander Rice, which proves that Apocalypse would have actually given mutants the chance to thrive. Necessary Evil is by no means disqualifying for Pure Evil, especially because he never foresaw their unforgivable crimes at all and did everything out of a selfish desire for power for its own sake. His past in Prehistoric Egypt is a complete mystery, and his actions likely push him far past anything bad that potentially happened to him.
- His actor, Oscar Isaac, also ironically portrayed a Pure Good, Mr. Knight.
- Ironically, they’re both Egypt themed Marvel characters.
- He is the only Pure Evil from the X-Men movies to appear in multiple films, since Sebastian Shaw, Ajax, Dr. Zander Rice, Donald Pierce, and Vuk are all one-shot villains.
