Apep (also known as Apepi and by his Greek name Apophis) was the evil god of darkness in Egyptian mythology, and he is considered the overall main antagonist of the mythology. He was the archenemy of the Egyptian solar god, Ra.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Every night, Apep would rise in an attempt to kill Ra to prevent sunrise and bring Egypt into eternal darkness.
  • He is often noted for solar eclipses, which were often viewed as Apep being victorious over Ra. Given that his goal is to make sure there is no light in Egypt and bring the world into absolute chaos to the point that even Set opposes him, these associations make sense.
  • He's not only the only deity in Egyptian mythology who was not worshiped, but every prayer regarding Apep was against him.
  • Whenever he is defeated, Apep will rise once again to continue his conquest to destroy the light of Egypt. In fact, he was so persistent that the gods had to be assisted by the dead at times.
  • Unlike Ammit, who only consumes the souls of sinners, Apep devours and corrupts the souls of everyone he meets, including other gods.
  • In some stories, he hypnotizes Ra and his followers, with Set being the only one to resist and stop him. Other sources state that Apep swallows Ra whole, leaving him and Set to cut an opening through Apep's stomach to escape.
  • It is implied that he had the power to lead an army of demons whom he would send out to prey on the living and the dead every year. There is a book dedicated to stopping Apep.

Trivia[]

  • Due to how old Egyptian mythology is, he could possibly be the first Pure Evil in history. In fact, the earliest known depiction of Apep is speculated to be on a Naqada I C-ware bowl dated to have been sculpted around 4000-3550 BCE. If this is true, this would make the Apep legend at least 5500-6000 years old.
