Angel Eyes, also known as "The Bad", is the titular main antagonist of Sergio Leone's 1966 legendary western film The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
He is a traitorous and cruel assassin who crosses paths with the other two titular characters, all looking for a stash of stolen Confederate Gold, worth $200,000. He has become one of the most iconic villains in film history.
He was portrayed by the late Lee Van Cleef.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He was a known assassin which implies that he already killed several people by contract before the movie.
- Tracks down and murders a man named Stevens as ordered by an employer named Baker. When the man informs him about Bill Carson's gold and offered him money ($1,000) to spare his life, he kills him and takes the money for himself.
- Murdered the child of his victim.
- After being paid ($500) by his employer, he murdered him and laughed about it, wanting to keep information of the gold for himself.
- Beat a hooker for information about the location of gold.
- Having infiltrated the Union forces and taken command over a POW camp, Angel Eyes has Tuco brutally tortured and watched with pleasure until he gave him the name of the Cemetery where the gold was kept. During the torture session, he forced prisoners-of-war to sing and play music to cover up the sounds of the abuse. One prisoner informs Blondie that Tuco is not the first prisoner in the camp to have been tortured by Angel Eyes.
- Ordered Wallace to have Tuco executed after he was no longer useful.
- Betrayed Blondie and ordered his men to kill him and Tuco.
- Intended to murder Blondie and Tuco at Sad Hill Cemetery and take the gold for himself.
- While the Dollars Trilogy has a very high heinous standard with the likes of villains such as Ramón Rojo and El Indio, it should be noted that unlike Ramon and El Indio, Angel Eyes is an greedy assassin who works independently and isn’t a crime lord, even though he has a gang himself, they are just corrupted officials and mercenaries, who Angel Eyes quickly gets rid of.
- It also should be noted that unlike The Man with No Name, Angel Eyes has no redeeming qualities.
Trivia[]
- In the original 177-minute Italian version and the 2003 Extended Cut, Angel Eyes felt pity for the soldiers that suffered in war, taking away his Pure Evil status. However, since this scene was removed in the US release, that version is the one that qualifies as PE.
- Angel Eyes, alongside Ramón Rojo and El Indio, is one of the three villains of the Dollars trilogy that is Pure Evil.
