Andrew "Andy" Evans is the main antagonist of the 1999 novel Speak. He also appears as a minor antagonist in its sequel, Catalyst.

He is a high school senior who puts on a façade of being a charming yet sleazy jock, but as the story progresses, Andy is revealed to be more sinister than what was initially realized. Towards the end of the book, Andy is exposed for having prolifically raped and assaulted his female classmates.

He was also the one who kick-started the events of the book by raping Melinda, which led her to call the police, culminating in the end-of-the-summer party getting interrupted and her reputation in tatters.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Raped a drunk Melinda Sordino at a party (thus giving her PTSD), which led to several unjust arrests when she called the cops afterwards.
  • Harassing Melinda inside and outside of school out of sadism.
  • It's revealed through graffiti in a bathroom stall that he raped many more girls than just Melinda, with them agreeing to stay away from Andy.
  • Manipulating Melinda's friend Rachel to be his girlfriend. Fortunately, before it's too late, she later leaves him when she finds out how terrible he is.
  • Attempting to rape Melinda a second time after she dampened his reputation.
  • While he seems to be an innocent and friendly person, it's all an act to hide his dark, sadistic nature.
  • He doesn't care about anyone but himself. Even his friends, he just uses to boost his popularity and sees them more as pawns than actual people.
  • While the punishments and bullying he has received in the novel Catalyst can be considered excessive, they are played for satisfaction because he actually got what he deserved for what he has done to Melinda and the others.

Trivia[]

  • Only his novel counterpart qualifies as Pure Evil, whereas his film counterpart is only confirmed to have raped Melinda, with no implications of his crimes being serial.
